ON THE BROADWAY SCENE j NEW YORK May 10 PERSIAN ROOM OPENING The irony bf show business Judy Garland walks out of night club en gagments but Celeste Holm shows up Miss Holm at the Plazas Persian Room Wednes ¬ day night and spent almost 45 minutes try ¬ ing to explain in song exactly what a man wants from a woman and what a woman wants from a man Her course in do ¬ mestic relations failed enlighten or entertain But with a large hooray I am delighted to report that her final number which would have been surefire in any event semisaved the night Stripping down to the equivalent of a leotard Miss Holm in drum majorette style led the orchestra in a march through the audience back on stage and out It was fresh unusual and wonderfully re1 ceived ceivedThe The earliest part of the show gave us the same feeling as when you visit a friend who has a 12yearold daughter who sings There you are balancing a teacup on your knee wondering How is it possible that a little girl can know the words to so many songs I cannot understand Miss Holm Certainly she has proved on Broadway as well as in motion pictures that she is a woman of talent and taste How then can she face a New York audience with absolutely the most inadequate material I have ever seen in a first class cafe It takes courage courageA A A A ALast Last year when Miss Holm opened at the Hotel Pierres Cotillion Room I report ¬ ed unfavorably on her act for pretty much the same reasons My comments were an ¬ swered by a question from her press rep ¬ resentatives who wanted to know if my attitude was due to having received a bad table They were the first and the last ever to question my integrity as well as my affection for performers in general which would prevent me from using this column as a club even if Id I been seated in the kitchen As it hap pened my table had been at ringside I occupied an equally satisfactory table Wednesday night nightA A A A ASHUBERT SHUBERT ALLEY Denise Darcel will replace Abbe Lane in Oh Captain for the three summer months Greer Gar son wants to stay on Bway even after Mame closes Shes searching for a play Also has bucks will invest Moss Harts As Thousands Cheer is being planned as a TV spec Ewybody wants to come to Broadway Helen Deutsch one of Hollywoods top writers has only one Continued on Page FiftyNine ON THE BROADWAY SCENE SCENEBy By BURT BOYAR Continued from Page Two Twobig big ambition To do a big fat smash hit Broadway play this year Richard Rodgers was so crazy about Jane Powell at the Persian Room that he told her he was going to look around for a play to produce for her herA A A A ASHOW SHOW FOLK Sammy Davis Jrs can canYas Yas chair on the Anna Lucasta movie movieset set doesnt have his name on it He asked askedthem them to write Eartha Kitts CoStar Milton Berle plays Skiny DAmatos 500 Club in Atlantic City starting Aug 23 for nine days Skinny is all performers fa ¬ vorite boss Poor Timmie Rodgers His union suspended him until he cleaned up a lumpy debt to the Gale agency Cant work till he pays it off On the other hand he cant pay it off till he works Monte Proser and Rod Alexander canceled the deal for him to stage the shows at Cafe de Paris Then they made up Roberta Sherwood plays the Latin Quarter this time around They mustve bid higher than Aug 28 If y wanta see the world join the Copa where she last played Opens the American Guild of Variety Arti1 Jane Powell signed to play the Sp Club at Monte Carlo Shell do onj a big charity ball
