Citing Marylands common heritage with horse racing since 1743 when the Maryland Jockey Club was founded Gov Theodore R McKeldin center presents a proclamation to MJC officers Executive Director Louis Pondfreld right and President Herman Cohen designating May 1217 as Preakness Week in the state Climaxing a full week of sports and civic events here will be the 82nd running of the 100000 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico on Saturday May 17 Maryland Observes Preakness Week1 By Governors Special Proclamation Planned Festivities Include TV Stars Golf Tournament Dinner Big Race Saturday SaturdayBy By Staff Correspondent CorrespondentPIMLICO PIMLICO Baltimore Md May 10 By special proclamation of Gov Theodore R McKeldin the State of Maryland will begin observance of Preakness Week starting Monday and culminating with the 82nd edition of the classic race at the Pimlico course next Saturday Many special events and sporting contests have been scheduled throughout the week with most of the ac ¬ tivity centered around this track trackThe The Preakness Week festivities actu ¬ ally were due to begin Sunday afternoon with the annual yearjing show of the Mary ¬ land Horse Breeders Association on the lawn of the Members Club which the public was invited to attend The real whirl of events gets under way Monday with tele ¬ vision day at Pimlico with a dozen of the leading TV personalities from Balti ¬ more stations participating participatingEach Each of the television stars will sponsor a horse in the Television Day Purse and the one whose horse scores in the race will present a trophy to the winning owner The sponsors will be Galen Fromme Joe Groghan Brent Gunts and Bob Jones from WBAL Keith McBee Jack Wells Nancy Deane and Buddy Deane from WJZ and Sylvia Scott Ann Mar Dave Stickle and Matt Thomas from WMAR The feature race of the day will be the Preakness Prep which will be televised by WMAR with Sylvia Scott doing the color commentary A fashion show will be pre ¬ sented on the telecast Morning evening newspapermen from all over the country here to cover the Preakness will be guests at the annual dinnerdance of the Balti ¬ more Sports Reporters Association in the Pimlico Members Club ClubThe The Preakness Womens Golf Tourna ¬ ment sponsored by the Baltimore Golf As ¬ sociation will be held Tuesday at the Forest Park Golf Club Wednesday highlight will be the 34th running of the Black Eyed Susan Stakes for threeyearold fillies filliesThe The annual Alibi Breakfast will be held Thursday morning in the Members Club with members of the press discussing Sat ¬ urdays Preakness with owners and trainers of horses scheduled to start in the classic Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons who trained four Preakness winners will be honored at the track Friday preceding the third run ¬ ning of the Mr Fitz Handicap The annual Preakness press party featuring a bixie layd jazz band is scheduled for 8 p m Friday at the Sheraton Belvedere Hotel HotelPimlicos Pimlicos gates will be opened at 930 a m on Preakness Day with entertainment scheduled throughout the morning and afternoon right up to the 545 p m post time for the big race
