California gy Oscar Of is Silky Deserves Another Chance Shoe Whittingham Outlines Llangollen Plans Try Race Info1 Board for Backstretch BackstretchHOLLYWOOD HOLLYWOOD PARK Inglewood Calif May 10 Yes Im going back to ride Silky Sullivan in the Preakness observed the diminutive Willie Shoemaker here this morning on the back stretch because I agree that he should be given one more chance Maybe he cant beat the likes of Tim Tarn but I am positive he an make a far better showing than he did in the Kentucky Der ¬ by As I said at the time he couldnt get a hold of the track and we all know he can do better than he did So while I am re ¬ serving a final estimate of the horse as to true ability I think the flight to Baltimore will be well worth while on my part Shoemaker was a little late in checking into Hollywood Park having stopped off en route from the Derby to visit his close friend Ralph Lowe LoweAsked Asked about reports that he had an oil field in Texas Shoemaker replied Ive got one producing well and that isnt enough to make me a big oil man Shoe ¬ maker incidentally is riding the season here without a call ie is truly free lancing excepting that he is to stay with Round Table and has agreed to ride the top juvenile prospect in the Rex Ellsworth stable Oscar O OCharlie Charlie Whittingham trainer of Llangollen Farms also adheres to the notion that he for one isnt going to weaken oh Gone Fishin as a worthy prospect until after the Preakness explaining I knew in advance of the Derby that Gone Fishin would not extend himself in certain types of mud As you know the morning of the race it was sloppy and loose and by loose I mean nonsticky But during the afternoon it dried out and became quite a different sort of a proposition Im gambling on the chance of a fast track in the Preak ¬ ness and besides the horse is back there If he doesnt show well hell come back to Hollywood Park where he will have a lot of chance to run for before the season is over But if he makes the kind of a showing which I know he is capable he will be kept in the East for a run in the Belmont BelmontContinue Continue Present Campaign Pattern PatternQueried Queried as to reports that Mrs Richard Lunn would abandon her far western racing operations as well as the farms breeding activity Llangollen will disperse its California production holdings mostly broodmares in a special FasigTipton sale at Pomona on June 30 Whittingham answered our present plan is to con ¬ tinue to race along our present established pattern of Santa Anita in the winter Hollyyood Park in the sum ¬ mer with Chicago and the East for the late summer and fall fallMrs Mrs Lunn wound up with so many horses that the fun began to disappear and the move to concentrate her production activity in Virginia was dictated by that factor plus the item that the farm at Chiho was in a legal mess meaning that the water rights on the prop ¬ erty were as far as we were concerned cloudy How ¬ ever Llangollen is not closing the door completely on California Mrs Lunn still has 20 acres near Santa Monica which is not for sale and which is being used as a rest farm for some thoroughbreds and could house several mares if Llangollen wished to utilize the services of certain California sires to provide a desired Tilood line pattern patternNew New Accommodation for Horsemen HorsemenNot Not really vexed but just constantly interrupted during past years by horsemen riding by the office of the racing secretary and inquiring if certain races would go Johnny Maluvius dreamed up the idea of a tote board which was put into action on opening day This board has eleven numbers first race through eighth plus one for the sub and two others for extra races Promptly at815 every morning the board lights up to show which races have filled to the point they are bound to be raced ie at that point having the min ¬ imum of six starters Horsemen going by with sets to be worked can tell at a glance if a race for which they have entered is going and decree a morning work or blowout or just a gallop as the circumstances dictate Entries close here promptly at nine ocloch in the morning and that 45 minutes gives the trainer ample opportunity to train in pretty full knowledge of whether an intended starter actually will get to the post the next afternoon At least they dont have to stop to make a personal inquiry inquiryStill Still another technical improvement in the office of the racing secretary is a new file being used to keep certificates of registration This file specially designed is fireproof as much as any piece of equip ¬ ment can be termed f ireproof and is automatically in ¬ dexed ie you press a button and out comes the de ¬ sired certificate It would cost more than 7500 to replace the certifications if they wore to be lost dam ¬ aged or destroyed Maluvius explains and the invest ¬ ment in this safekeeping equipment seems well justified justifiedIncidentally Incidentally Maluvius informs that a minor change has been made in the twoyearold overnight program for this year although the number about nine such suchContinued Continued on Page FiftyThree CALIFORNIA CALIFORNIABy By OSCAR OTIS Continued from Page Six Sixraces races a week will remain constant That means two a day every day but Saturdays and irtajor holidays But on days when two juvenile races are in the book and in the vent the higher class one does not fill well be more inclined to split the cheaper most often a maiden race than we have been in previous seasons We are going along in this respect at the suggestion of the California Breeders who feel such a procedure would be helpful to the industry In past seasons we have encountered trouble on occasions in filling races of winners preferred and even nonwinners of two open events There simply isnt enough twoyearold racing preceding the Hollywood Park season to enable us to card very many just under stakes calibre allowance events and get substantial fields It is worthy of note that the bulk of the twoyearold stake racing has been pushed backwards in the season a bit and while there are a pair of stakes just after midmonth the 15000 Cabrillb for colts and geldings on May 20 the 15000 Junior League for fillies on May 23 both stakes are for California foals with the first open stake the 20000 Haggin not to be decided until May
