September 12 hisliclass and diver ¬ sified program was provided for the closing day of the Coney Island Jockey Clubs racing season of 1IOS It contained three big fixtures including the Anmiiil Champion the Great Eastern the most important handieap for twoyearolds exclusively and tin Weslbiiry Steeplechase over the full course In addition to this trio of great turf events there were an equal nnniher of attractive overnight races in which u nuinlier of the best horses in training were engaged The smallest field of the afternoon was in the Annual Champion Kins James Fal cada Doranti and Chief Brant Not one of the contestants had ever been tried out over this dis ¬ tance and while King lames was at all times iiuoted and accorded support at odds on there were any number ready to take a chance on Fal cada and Dorante to beat him The real betting on the race however was conliued to backing Fal cada and Dorante for place at 4 to 5 each eachTodays Todays Annual Champion was the poorest from a time standpoint of any yet run Shilling had evi ilejitly been told to wait with Kins James and imme ¬ diately proceeded to overdo riding instructions 1n silile to keep in behind any of the others with King James he was forced to make the pace and made it very slowly for the first half which was covered at about a twominute rate The small Held maintained fairly close order for two miles and then simultaneously moved forward with a rush The ffvorite survived after a terrific and spectacular driving struggle with Falcada in which the result was in doubt up tn almost the very last stride The favorite which seemed beaten for more than a furlong of the stretch thrilled the spectators with his bulldog courage The race was satisfying enough from a spectacular stand ¬ point and 8OOO racegoers present voiced their en ¬ thusiasm with vigor vigorFollowing Following is the condensed history of the Annual 3K4 Stalwart 113 Redfern 19030 54 = 1903 Sysonby 115 Nicol 20530 54 11100 furlongs The field named overnight was reduced to eight starters by the withdrawal of Helmet and there was considerable disappointment thereat This left Hilarious alone to represent James It Keene It was the assumption that the stable had every cou lidence in his ability to disjiose of his formidable ppositiou that caused the misguided public to back Jiim at short odds In the rivjiniug Hilarious
