EFFENDI ON THE IMPROVE SON OF PREVIOUS AND HATASOO WINS THE BAY RIDGE HANDICAP. Lady Bedford and Prince Gal Show Lack of Stamina Ideal Day for Racing at Sheepshead Bay. New York, June 30. This was an ideal afternoon for racing at Sheepsliead Bay. A grateful breeze blew freshly in from the nearby ocean anil weather conditions were perfect. A big off-day crowd was present and witnessed some excellent sport. Only three starters, Effendi. Petticoat and Lady Bedford contested the Bay Ridge Handicap. They finished in the order named, with the. winner tlie cxtrenie outsider of tlie trio. Maddens filly enjoyed the call In the betting and closed at odds-on While in a contending, position from start to finish she failed quite conclusively in showing the stamina with which she has boon credited from the beginning of her career. Effeiidl made the running throughout. The favorite shot her bolt on the far turn, when she momentarily ranged alongside the leader. She finally lost second place to Petticoat after a long-sustained closing drive. The winner lias the appearance of a horse of much substance and may eventually develop into nearly a top-noteher. Prince Gal displayed a pronounced lack of staying ability when he narrowly escaped defeat by inferior opposition In the second race. Firebox followed with a convincing victory over tlie grass course. Several good ones, including Rocky OBrien and Pretend, finished behind him. Both of these good California campaigners have seemingly trained off. The last two races, over the grass and Futurity courses, were won by favorites Lad of Langden and Cellaret. George Rose is said to have laid a bet of ,000 to 10 against Everett, the runner-up in the third race; Steeplechase jockey Harry Stones broken wrist was improperly set at the Coney -Island Emergency Hospital, whither he was removed after his fall in the steeplechase on Tuesday. During a second operation in New York the noted cross-conntry rider nearly died while under the influence of chloroform
