- WINNERS OF THE GOLDEN ROD STAKES : ; : For the first six years of its running the Golden Rod Stakes was a dash of seven-eighths of a mile, for two-year-olds, and a race for stayers. Then It was reduced to six and a half furlongs and has been kept at that distance. This year it is only an overnight closing purse, but its name is preserved and, in the long run, it will probably be restored io its old-time dignity of a closed stake race. Probably the best horse that ever won the Golden Rod was Dominos great rival, Henry of Navarre, a very high-class horse in ail respects. Its first winner. Lew Weir, was much better known to Chicagoans than to New Yorkers because, as the property of Edward Corrlgan, he won many good races over Chicago tracks and was raced but little at New York. Some other good horses that won the Golden Rod were Havoc, One I Love, Ty-pIkkhi II.. Bellario, Sergeant, Highball. .Oiseau and Whimsical, Highball being an American Derby winner and a brilliant racer of brief career and tragic end. The record of the Golden Rod is: Year. First.
