LADFIELD TRIUMPHANT Scores His Third Success of Detroit Meeting in Belle Isle Handicap Beats Double B by Half a Length Lengththe the Latter Outlasting Rock X Xby by a Head for Second DETROIT Mich June 8 Ladfield ster ¬ ling son of Ladkin which races for Mrs C R Crane scored his second stakes tri ¬ umph and his third victory of the Detroit spring season in annexing the Belle Isle Handicap featuring the program here this afternoon and Double B Jay Weils Detroit Derby eligible served notice that he must be reckoned with in that important fixture fixtureCharging Charging through the stretch with a de ¬ termined challenge Ladfield reached the end of the six furlongs sprint which was worth 2280 to the Windsor sportswoman a half length before Double B which lasted to head the Tranquility Farms Rock X for second While Ladfield was a noble win ¬ ner Double B succumbed to his conqueror in brilliant fashion The well threeyear old under ninetythree pounds worked out seven furlongs in 128 128A A field of eight which also included Polar Flight Fred Algers Derby candidate started with Ladfield shouldering the top impost of 120 pounds He ran the three quarters in 112 wonderful time consider ¬ ing the slow condition of the track trackThere There was little delay at the start with the speedy Transmutable and Double B go ¬ ing out to show the way Rock X was in third place and the field concluded the half mile with the ultimate winner holding the others safe and on the inside As they en ¬ tered the stretch where Double B disposed of Transmutable Lee Hardy guided Ladfield to the outside and with long sweeping strides he overtook the leaders in rapid fashion Gaining the lead in the last sev ¬ enty yards he was drawing away when the finish was reached reachedAfter After attaining a clear advantage a fur ¬ long from the finish Double B tired but lasted to beat Rock X which faltered slight ¬ ly after offering a bold challenge While Precursor came from far back to finish in fourth place Wild Pigeon Polar Flight and Kieva were outrun outrunFrisky Frisky Matron C W Shaw Jrs con ¬ sistent fiveyearold daughter of Bistouri provided the most popular victory of the day by accounting for the Lansing Purse which was decided over six furlongs as the supporting race Well ridden by D Sum ¬ mers and saved when Gift of Roses sprinted into a long lead in the first qufirter Frisky Continued on twentysixth page LADFIELD TRIUMPHANT Continued from first page Matron took command approaching the stretch to be a length before F J Estes Glynson which got up to beat the tiring Gift of Roses by a nose for second The latter was three lengths before Wichita City which got up to save fourth from Billy Bee BeeOut Out of nine named overnight only five started and after holding third place for a half mile Billy Bee gave way to Glynson and Wichita City CityAlthough Although there was a chill to the air and the track was in a slow condition overhead conditions were ideal for the sport and a crowd estimated at 12000 was present The program was started off with a bang when the wirmer of the first race returned a rec ¬ ord payoff for Detroit racing He also started a Daily Double that returned the biggest dividend since the sport was revived in Michigan However favorites charged back in fine style to garner more than their share of the laurels laurelsPaying Paying 28120 for each 2 straight a record for Detroit racing J W Shaws Pretty Monk lasted to beat Mrs A M Creechs Tremolo by a nose at the end of the threequarters dash that opened the program Shasta Broom was third a half length back of Tremolo and a length before the heavily supported Don Vern which weakened after offering a strong bid near ing the final furlong furlongIi Ii J Sandrocks aging Fortunate Youth rewarded at his first asking here in win ¬ ning the second race The eightyearold son of Lucky Hour completed a Daily Double that returned 400020 to three holders of Daily Double tickets At the end of the six furlongs Fortunate Youth was slightly more than a length before Gladess with High Delight third
