This became evi- j dent when I. J. Collins Paradisical was vie-i torious over Sun Portland, Illinois Derby [ i ! j winner, last week at Detroit. It also was i ! emphasized with the crushing defeat of , Phil Reuters Roman Soldier in the Ameri-1 can Derby and with the marked improve-i ment of J. F. Clarks Clang; D. B. Midkiffs 3 J Tearout, winner of the Latonia Derby; L. ; Beydas Banish Fear and L. E. Komorous j Chief Cherokee. Expert observers as well as horsemen in 1 general are of the opinion that the three-t year-olds of this season have yet a long way . to go in deciding the championship. Black c Helens victory in the American Derby, the e defeat of Omaha by Rosemont and the vie- , tory of Sun Portland over Roman Soldier F and Sun Portlands defeat by Paradisical, • makes the three-year-old title one which is s j i considerably muddled. I Cleveland fans are looking forward to one e j I , of the most open races in history of the i I Ohio Derby, which was begun with the vie-j " I tory of Black Gold in 1924. They point to 0 the possibility of an upset inasmuch as Sun n I , Portland and Paradisical meet again and in n . the same race will be Tearout, Clang, Eddie e , J., Beaver Dam and others. The nominations for the Ohio Derby close e i ■ on Saturday, June 29, and racing secretary | i Richard Leigh announces the following g | nominations received to date: Phil Reuters s Roman Soldier; Mrs. Sila3 Masons Sun " I | Portland; L. E. Komorous Chief Cherokee; • L. Beydas Banish Fear; Odessa Farms Ed-h die J.; D. B. Midkiffs Tearout; T. E. Keat-e -" ings McCarthy; Milky Way Farms Blue J Armor and Gallaclay; Wm. Hinphys Dark * Woman; Old Gold Stables Transmu table; [ I. J. Collins Paradisical; J. F. Clarks Clang; ■ S. Mulvihills Beaver Dam; Morris Grin-U " ers Double B.; T. C. Wordens Prince Splen-;-:dor; l" B. Hernandez Moratorium. General manager Eddy said he had posi-- tive assurances that Sun Portland would be e shipped here as will Paradisical. He also is is in communication with D. B. Midkiff and 1 says he has high hopes that Tearout will come. Others who have signified their in-"■- i- tention of shipping here include Beaver ,r Dam, McCarthy, Blue Armor, Eddie J., Chief Cherokee, Banish Fear and Prince Splendor. He said that because of Roman Soldier going .. amiss in the American Derby, he will not know until next week whether the Deri s_ ~T troit Derby winner will come. Clang and Moratorium are already on the grounds. Railroad and boat officials have written " to general manager Eddy saying that spe-s ? cial week-end rates would prevail over their lines from nearby points. He said that he ie expected a large influx of visitors in view w : , of the fact that the all-star baseball game! lf on the Monday following the Derby would also prove a magnet for fans seeking an n exciting week-end. Both Sun Portland and Paradisical are expected to be shipped here this coming f Monday, according to general manager Eddy. ~~ Special barns have been set aside for J? the Derby candidates. It is Clevelands first Derby since 1932 when Economic captured the event. *
