greats of years gone by Only a few years ago Carroll Shilling one of the great ¬ est jockeys of all time after not having rid ¬ den a race in more than twentyfive years was able to go to the post during schooling hours in the mornings with a group of ex ¬ ercise boys and riders and leave the gate in front in nine out of ten attempts attemptsThey They also like to relate of the whipriding ability of Eddie Taplin Guy Burns Eddie Duggan and Earl Pool How Marshall Lilley long connected with the Whitneys was able to work a horse within a fraction of a speci ¬ fied time or get off a horse and tell just how fast he worked For a time Lilley trained a division of the Greentree Stable but isnt listed as such any longer He was known as the exercise boy with a watch in his head and along with Willie More house the two were just about tops among the exercise boys boysThey They like to inform the younger genera ¬ tion of the training wizardry of James Rowe and Sam Hildreth One story regarding Rows is worth repeating It concerns a well known trainer who came to Rowe at one of the meetings in Maryland during a particu ¬ larly backward spring lamenting the fact that his horses werent ready that he had only a fiveeighths mile training track at the farm on which to get them ready Rowe had just won a stake over a distance of ground the day previous with one of the Harry Payne Whitney string fresh out of winter quarters answered Why I got my horses ready just walking them under a shed shedThey They like to tell about the ability to net a field away from the post possessed leading rider of 19067 holder of the record of win ¬ ning more races in one year than any other jockey he having chalked up 388 victories in 1906 Miller was a frequent visitor to New England tracks a couple of years ago agoPOWERS POWERS STILL ACTIVE IN SPORT SPORTVince Vince Powers leading rider of the country in 19089 is still active in the sport He trains the steeplechase string of the Green tree Stable Guy Garner who topped all riders in 1910 rode considerably in France and has only been back in his native coun try the past few years He was a frequent visitor at Hialeah during the winter season Merritt Buxton led the riders in 1913 Mer ritt along with his brother Clarence con ¬ duct a favorite wintering place for thor ¬ oughbreds at Columbia S C Besides this Merritt is one of our top trainers Johnnie McTaggart premier rider in 1914 is still active and was seen galloping Damaged Goods last summer when it seemed for a time that that miss would be the top filly of the year Willie Crump leading rider of 1917 has become an outstanding condi ¬ tioner His developing of Head Play prob ¬ ably being his most noteworthy achieve ¬ ment mentIn In 1915 Mack Garner was at the head of the American jockey list and like Frankie Robinson leader in 1916 and 1918 has passed to the great beyond beyondCliff Cliff Robinson won the riding honors in 1919 Cliff suffered the loss of a leg in a training accident He was conditioning a modest string a year or so ago Jimmy But well top pilot in 1920 is an official at sev ¬ eral tracks and currently is serving as pa ¬ trol judge at Suffolk Downs Chic Lang on top in 1921 and most generally known as the rider of Reigh Count is now a jockeys agent Last fall in Maryland he was making the riding engagements for jockey Manny Berg BergLEADING LEADING RIDERS OF 1922 1922Mark Mark Fator Americas leading reinsman in 1922 was employed in the jockeys quar ¬ ters at Delaware Park last summer Ivan Parke the last1 rider to top the list of the nations jockey list for two successive sea ¬ sons 19234 is campaigning a string in the MidWest Lee Hardy leader in 1927 decided to end his race riding career last summer He took over several horses to train and met with moderate success However this spring he disposed of the one horse that he had and retired to his home in Illinois IllinoisH H R Hard Riding Riley top rider in 1930 is another who turned trainer and campaigned a small string at Narragansett Park this spring Harry Roble who led them all in 1930 is reported to be operating a farm The following boys who topped the nations riders are still active and right at the top of their profession Johnny Gilbert 1932 Jackie Westrope 1933 Maurice Peters 1934 Charlie Stevenson 1935 Basil James 1936 Johnny Adams 1937 Johnny Long den 1938 and Don Meade 1939 1939Last Last years champion Earl Dew died from injuries sustained in a fall at Agua Caliente soon after having won the most coveted honor that can fall to the lot of a race rider the American jockey championship of the year
