Providence Stakes Big Event at Narragansett v 5,000 Test on July 18 Chief Offering During Spring Meeting PAWTUCKETi R. I., June 13.— Nomination blanks for the five stakes to be decided at the 24-day Narragansett Park summer meeting, July 2 through July 28, are in the mails to horsemen today. Nar-, ragansetts second meeting will be staged from August 27 to September 22. The highlight of this abbreviated session will be the sixth running of the Providence Stakes, a mile and a furlong test for three-year-olds, to be contested on Wednesday, July 18, for 5,000 added money. B. L. Williams sturdy colt, Passemson, took the top eariy in this event last year and was never headed. Next in importance is the sixth running of the Narragansett Nursery Stakes, which, as the title implies, is restricted to two-year-olds and will be run over five and a half furlongs on Saturday, July 21, with ,500 added money. Mrs. Sara Chaits brilliant but erratic colt, Lord Putnam, took the honors last year. The first stake of the meet is the Spring Handicap, on July 7, wherein three-year-i olds and upward will test their speed over six furlongs for ,000. Mrs. H. Toff els Baliydam scored a clever victory in last - years running. Middle .distance runners get their opportunity on July 14 when the King Philip Handicap, at one mile and a sixteenth for three-year-olds and upward with ,000 added, will be run. The Calu- - met cast-off, De Luxe, scored iri this event last year in the colors of True Davis, Jr., and later went on to win the famous Narragansett Special. The, time-honored Governors Handicap closes the meeting on July 28. This race, for three-year-olds and upward, will be " decided overdone mile and a furlong for ,000 added. Won last year by the B. and S. Stables Outland, the Governors is Gansetts oldest.stake, having been on the roster every year since the tracks inception in 1934, with the stake split into two sections in 1946.
