NOTES OF THE TURF. Manifesto, the once great steeplechaser of the English turf, is dead. Weights for the first of the big handicaps in the east are due Wednesday. Dr. McDowell says he is satisfied that Delhi has been permanently cured of the bleeding habit. George Walker sailed from New York Saturday for Germany to take hp bis duties as trainer for Messrs. Weinberg. The distance of the Saratoga Special has been Increased from five and one-half furlongs to three-quarters of a mile. Among the Kentucky turfmen who have gone to Florida for the winter are Sidney Bedford, Col. W. L. Simmons and George Voorhies. George J. Long, proprietor of the Bashford Manor Farm of Kentucky and owner of Sir Huon, is to spend the remainder of the winter in California. It Is pretty easy for Dick Williams at Ascot Park when be cau get Fireball in a race in which he is a 1 to C favorite. San Francisco Chronicle. Pittsburg dispatches say Mrs. Grace M. Brown, daughter-in-law of the late Captain S. S. Brown, is contemplating suit for one-third of the dead turfmans estate. If there Is racing at Providence this year a ,000 Derby will be added to the list of stakes, which will be the richest event of its kind decided on the "second circuit," barring the Buffalo Derby of the same value. Arthur B. Hancock says Fatherless and his eighteen yearlings are In excellent shape at Ellerslle Stud at Charlottesville, Va. Of the thirty-seven mares bred to Fatherless last spring thirty-three aro said to be safely in foal. Fred G. Belknap of GramHiRapIds has taken charge of the horses of G. W. J. Blssell at the Lexington track. Mr. Belknaps good filly. The Belle, Is at Grand Rapids and Is said to be in excellent condition. He has not decided whether or not he will train her at Lexington. fi-
