HENRY SIMONS SUCCESS WITH XATHERON. Buys Horse for 0 and Scores Victory at Long Odds Talent Benefited hy Withdrawals. New Orleans, La., January 22. Changed weather conditions and a heavy track decreased the attendance materially and spoiled what otherwise would have been considered a good program for Monday at the old track. Withdrawals were numerous, but the wholesale scratching had one good effect. It left evenly balanced fields to go in the different races. The talent for the first time In a week found the matter of picking winners a bit more simplified and at the close of the afternoon, had a shade the better of the argument with the layers. The surprise of the afternoon was Latherons victory in the closing race at a long price. La t heron was secured by Henry Simons for the insignificant sum of 0 at a sale held in the paddock last Saturday. His former owner, Tony McCafferty, became disgusted with him after having tried for a whole year to get him in shape for a race. He finally managed to do so, but failed to bet on hlra when he won. Angered by this and symptoms of lameness In the horse, he decided to get rid of him. The only one to venture to bid on the horse when put up for sale was Simons and he led him to. the stable. After todays race the horse pulled up sound and the probabilities are tha Simons has secured a useful breadwinner. The usual daily run-up came after the finish of the first race when Miss Leeds was bid up 00 over her entered price of $.100 and bought by C. T. Pattersqb, whose Buxom finished second In the race. J. C. "Milam arrived today fmmMemphls and tb-" quested Secretary Nathanson- to reserve seventeen stalls for him at Oaklawn track. Tartans bad race of Saturday was explained by the fact that he developed a curb during the running and he will have to be fired and rested for the next month or so. Jockey Crlmmlns was suspended for one week by the starter for failure to leave the post with the rest of the field on Deuxtemps. Jockey McGees apprentice allowance expired yesterday.
