MASTERS0N FIRST IN THE ASCOT DERBY. Gamely Stands oif Good Lucks Challenge Charley a Disappointing Favorite Big Crowd Attends. Los Angeles, Cal., February 17. Derby Day at Ascot Park called out a crowd of about 8,000, many of the visiting Elks being on hand. The betting was heavy and spirited. For the Derby Charley was backed heavily and was an overwhelming public choice, but ran disappointingly. Masterson was liked by the wiseacres, many of them supporting him at 10 to 1. He won in a driving finish, gamely standing off Good Lucks determined challenge. The winner was wreathed with a floral horseshoe after the race and there was great applause. The racing was the best of the meeting thus far. Eliony was bid up from S00 to 1,000 by H. L. Jones and sold to him. W. Walker bid up The Roustabout from 00 to 1906.sh00 and got him. Aubuchon was fined 0 for rough riding on Potrero Grande, In the second race.
