In winning the Merchants Stakes at Lutonia today Edward Frazers speedy filly Concert, trained by J. C. Milam, proved one of the biggest surprises of the meeting. Concert was known to have no aversion for mud and with the light Impost of 80 pounds it would certainly seem that she had more than a look in for the event, but she has been tiring iu her races lately and many shrewd horse people concluded that she could not stay the mile route. This accounted for the exceedingly long price of 20 to 1 that was posted against her at one stage of the betting. Concert spreadeagled her company and won as her . rider pleased. The stake was worth ,1S5 to the winner, but her owner was deprived of ,100 of this amount, C. C. McCafferty bidding the filly up from the entered price of 00 to ,000. For au advance of Concert was bought In for the stable. - Todays curd was a good one, with a steeplechase over the short course, and a two-year-old race at fire, and a half furlongs that brought out some of the best youngsters at the track, as added attractions. The usual big Saturday holiday crowd was in attendance and the speculation was inuchbetter .than at any .previous time; .during the week. iu the third race, which was at five fuVloiigsTai number of juveniles that are eligible to the ,000 Cincinnati trophy to be run Tuesday went to the post. La Veitas victory, in view of the fact that she carried top weight 118 pounds, and conceded weight to all her competitors, was Impressive. It was a busy day for the selling race operators. In uddllou to the bidding up of Concert, J. C. Milam got It also iu the first race, when his Belle Scott was bid iqi by Frank Doss from to ,100. Milan bought the filly in. Doss also was anxious to secure Nouie Lucille, winner of the sixth race, estimating her value at 00 above the entered figure of 00. Trainer Davis retained her for the stable. Uncle Henry, winner of the last race and entered for 1906.sh00, was some time back claimed from a selling race from Captain Buubury. Today Cap-taiu Bunburys ageut bid him up to 00, but he was retailed with an advance bid. Frank Doss is evidently rankled over the claiming of his horse Wexford by Ed. Dealy some days ago, for yesterday he claimed J. C. Milams Captain Bush. C. C. McCafferty says he is in the selling race game to stay and that he is ready to pit himself against the field. "I want cheap horses," said McCafferty today, "and I think thats. the way to get them just now."
