SARATOGA RACING NEAR AT HAND. The Brighton Beach meeting has two weeks more to go and then comes the ever welcome Saratoga meeting. It begins Monday, August 6, and will continue until Thursday, August 30, leaving one blank day in New York racing, the Sheepshead Bay autumn meeting not beginning until Saturday, September 1. The Saratoga meeting always presents features peculiarly its own and devotees of the turf annually hasten there with the a it anticipation of novelties lends to freshen" !zeal.t For one thing the meeting introduces the Sanfoid horses and this stable always presents candidates capable of holding their own with the best. Last year it brought out the magnificent two-year-old Mohawk II., probably the best of his year. An injury crused. his early retirement, but he is now probably icady" for the mimic warfare of the track aud curiosity is rife concerning the form he may show this year as a three-year-old. He is engaged In the Saratoga Handicap, Travers Stakes, Great Republic Stakes and Saratoga Derby. The stable presents a goodly array of two-year-olds, all as yet unknown to fame. If another as good as Mohawk II. crops up In the list it will be quite In line with the record of the popular Sanford Stable. Of its old stantlbys, sturdy old Caughnawaga is nominated for the Saratoga Handicap and the Cup. Western horses usually cut such an Important figure at Saratoga that it is quite disappointing to find that Tokalon and First Mason have no stake engagements there and Sir Huon but one, he having been entered for the Saratoga Cup as a supplementary, July 2. To make up for this, in part, Rams Horn Is in the Great Republic, Saratoga Handicap, Merchants and Citizens Handicap, Saratoga Cup, Delaware Handicap aud Champlain Handicap, quite enough for one mouth. His stable mate, Phil Finch, is also well engaged and among other western horses nominated to various stakes are Bad News, Red Leaf, The Quail, Good Luck, Running Water, Ilazelthorpe, Nannie Hodge, Zienap, Batts, Fortunate, Rapid Water, Security, Guiding Star, Garnish, D.-ilvay, Gold Rose, Lady Navarre, John Smulskl, James Roddick, Yazd, Single Shot, Miss Strome, Betsy Binford, Oran, Berwick, Loxley, Ilardshot, Alleviator, Arcite, Faust, Golf Ball, Yankee Girl, Burleigh and Miltiades. Saratoga two-year-old racing is always closely scanned to detect Its bearing on the decision of the Futurity and quite a number of the winners of that grent race have been fitted there. Horace E., having no other stake engagement, has been wisely reserved for the Futurity, hut it is quite probable that he will be given the benefit of one or two races for purses in the course of the Saratoga meeting. Easterners will view the running of tins crack son of Bannockburn with vast concern.
