STEWARDS PUNISH MILLER. SUSPEND AND FINE HIM AFTER DISQUALIFYING GOLD COIN. Ballot Is the Victor in the Neptune Stakes Islip Handicap Goes to Dishabille Kings Daughter Wins Easily. : New York, July 21. Jockey Walter Miller is liniler suspension for two days anil in addition must pay a line of 00. The stewards at Brighton Beach today found him guilty of foul riding on Gold Coin in the fifth race and after disqualifying his mount to the favor of Voladay, they announced the punishment to this lad who has hitherto escaped disciplinary penalties on local tracks. The prospect of a set-back for the winner created a big commotion in the ring and when the final result was announced the joy of the layers knew no bounds. Voladay had gone badly In the market and little money was paid over his success, but witli Gold Coin it was different. He -was tile medium of a carefully planned and well executed coup, and 0,000 alone was diverted from the clique that engineered it not to speak of the thousands of wagers represented by Millers personal following. The affair created a great deal of feeling, which, was made manifest In the most public manner in the next race, which was won by Miller amid scenes of the wildest enthusiasm. The demonstration that greeted Kings Daughter on her return to the scales was scarcely less pronounced than the memorable one accorded Herniis in the Brighton Mile of last year. Tin" unusually heavy precipitation of Ihe morning had converted the track proper Into a canal, but running over it appeared to be nn attractive novelty to some and nn alluring possibility to others. It did not materially affect the sport, as fast time prevailed throughout the afternoon and the best horses were successful. This does not include Flying Virginian, the winner of the Curragh Steeplechase. Phantom and 1atagonian ran as If they had been wl.od with skates and were frequently in one anothers way during their first two miles of masterly ill-activity. The majority of the 2.1,000 persons present gave the winners ungrudging applause. There were two Important and splendid fixtures on the tint that made ample amends for any shortcomings in the remainder of the extensive program of seven races that constituted todays offering. The first was the well established Islip Handicap at one mile and an eighth, In which two crack western mares, Dishabille and Tokalon, battled for supremacy. After seven furlongs of strenuous endeavor these two turf stars drew out together and engaged in a desperate struggle for first lienors. George C. Bennetts diminutive daughter of Kings Counsel proved gamer. This was immediately followed by the running of the rich Neptune Stakes at six furlongs for two-year-olds. A small but select field headed by Ballot, the top weight at 125 pounds, started in this event. Mr. Keenes grand youngster, at lucrative odds, won like the colt or high class that he is. The contestants took close order at the start and maintained it until in the final furlong, where the Castleton-bred champion drew out to win almost as his rider pleased. Ballots owner was unable to be present owing to the severe illness of his brother Harry Keene. Kings Daughter demonstrated the possession of superior mud-running qualities by the easy manner in which she annexed the sprint handicap with such good ones as First Premium, Sir Hussell at the weights, SS pounds and Haudzarra, distant trailers at the finish. The Clown, long overdue, was successful after many previous ambitious attempts, and tow-roped a good band of selling platers in the last in remarkably fast time for the going. Angler was hid up from ,000 to ,000 by J. L. McGiimls after his win yesterday, hut was retained by owner Odom. It is rumored that Water Pearl, the great two-year-old of the year has gone wrong. The Paget youngster yesterday developed a slight lameness in the right foreleg, which accounts for his not starting in the rich Neptune Stakes today. John Condon arrived in New York from Chicago on Thursday. He was not in evidence at Brighton Beach this afternoon. Aletheuo was cut down in his race today. .Trainer It. Boyle was fined 00 for falling to. produce the horse Melbourne Nominee in time to start in the fifth race. F. It. Hitchcock has purchased Advance Guard aud donated him to the Breeding Bureau of the Jockey Club. John W. Rogers says the two fillies he sent to the post in the sixth race yesterday were in bad shape tills morning. Puritan Girl could hardly walk as the result of the kick she received from AJIeriou, while Fads and Fancies, has a swollen left hind leg, the enlargement being developed from a cut that looked insignificant just after the race.
