FEATURE RACE A GIFT TO PETER STERLING. Gipsano, the Steeplechase Favorite, Loses His Rider The Horse Jimmy Maher Is Destroyed. Buffalo, N. Y., July 21. Three favorites and a well backed second choice rewarded the form followers at Fort Erie today. An unusually large half holiday crowd was In attendance and it was further increased by two excursion trains from Toronto aud Hamilton. The Genessee Hotel Handicap for three-year-olds, was the feature of the card. The race was a gift to the favorite Peter Sterling. Although carrying 128 pounds, he had no trouble in disposing of his company. From the prices laid it looked as if the Brown stable would run one-two-three. The books in their anxiety to get in the money overlooked the fact that there were other horses in the race. Consequently they were heavily stung on the place and show book. The steeplechase handicap at two miles brought a field of six and Gipsano was always favorite. He was much the best and led the others over every obstacle until the last one was reached. Here he made a bad landing and unseated his rider. This left the race to Allegiance, which was closest up and finished in front of Trcnct the Mere. Jimmy Maher, while being worked on the track this morning, fell and broke his leg and was destroyed. He was the property of C. C. Sewell. John Murray, V. Hollar, W. II. Harris and W. T. Brinkworth shipped their stables to New York tonight J. S. Hawklua assoId--SpecIalljlceiiseto some New York parties and he was shipped in the same car. Jockey Swain was fined 5 for rough riding in the stake race. In going to the front with Little Mike he bumped into Crowsbade aud knocked him to his knees.
