NICOL REMAINS WITH COOK. CONTRACT FOR ANOTHER YEAR IS MADE WITH CHICAGO LADS MOTHER. Colonel Jim Douglas a Horso to Be Regarded in Any Company John Carroll Has Bad Rac-ing Luck Big Crowd at Latonia. Cincinnati, 0., July 2C. Another large crowd was in attendance at Latonia this afternoon, the fine weather and the prospect of witnessing good sport being responsible for the outpouring. Some of the races resulted in close finishes, but in the feature race luck played a prominent part. The long end of the purse went to Colonel Jim Douglas in decisive style, although John Carroll seemed to be the best horse and would in all probability have won or made it Interesting for the winner with equal racing luck. John Carroll was badly knncked about soon after the start, whereas the winner bad clear sailing throughout. John Carroll closed a big gap, but his early mishap left him outside the money despite his herculean effort. Colonel Jim Douglas is a greatly Improved horse and bears watching in any company. He will soon be taken to Saratoga and will be given a thorough tryout with the best sprinters there. Favorites fared badly during the day, only one o them coming to the rescue of the talent. This occurred in the third race when Free Booter took the purse, but only after a stern chase to overhaul Minnie Johnson, which threatened to repeat the performance by which she scored with odds of 100 to 1 against her. Jockey Nicol, In company with Bill Phillips, trainer for Fred Cook, arrived, today from Chicago, Where they hadbeen to corielude negotiations with Mrs. Nicol for the rider to remain in Cooks employ for another year. The terms of the contract were not disclosed. On good authority, however, It la stated that the figure was far below the offer made for the riders services by eastern owners. Mrs. Nicol desiring that her son remain in the service of the person who gave the boy his strt"4nd made him the good race rider he Is. Trainer Phillips says he has changed his mind about going to Saratoga and will ship several horses, including Minnie Adams, to New York in the near future where they-, will be raced this fall. Devout had , to be excused from starting in the handicap because of colic. Duessa was badly cut down in the first race and , will have to be thrown out of training. It is stated, that jockey Buchanan will shortly be granted a license and will begin riding soon.
