EDDIE WARE A SURPRISE. TICHENOR COLT WINS THE ALBANY HANDICAP WITH MUCH TO SPARE. Heavy Track Causes Withdrawals Dishabille Scores from Cottontown Little Scout Buns Without Blinkers Shot Gun Wins in a Canter. Saratoga, N. . Y., August 22. Heavy track conditions prevailed today, causing many withdrawals. Notwithstanding the depleted card, excellent racing resulted and a fair average of high class horses were In evidence. Dishabille, possibly the best four-year-old filly In training, took the mile handicap, third on the card, In easy fashion from the western crack Cottontown, which was making bis eastern debut. Cottontown was not" as well served by the muddy track conditions as George C. Bennetts filly, or the result might have been reversed today. Experts pronounced Cottontown a grand three-year-old. Considerable adverse criticism, however, was levelled at the colts heavily bandaged forelegs, an unfavorable sign and usually considered a drawback over a muddy track. The solitary stake fixture, the Albany Handicap for two-year-olds at six furlongs, furnished a complete upset in the victory of Eddie Ware. This colts recent races have been much below par. The Tichenor colt with J. Harris In the saddle towroped those opposed to him, including Smiling Tom and Killaioe. Close observers of the winners last two races were fully prepared for todays improvement. The choices were lost in the opening race for two-year-olds at live and one-half furlongs. H. M. Ziegler scored his first success of the season with Malacca. Nancy, a long shot, was second and the favorite,- Tlleiug, with Miller up, just earned third. Yama Christy easily won the steeplechase over the short course. The highly tried Commondale again came to grief and In precisely the same place as in his preceding start, at the third from the last jump. A pronounced cripple. Right Royal, scored by a narrow margin in the long distance selling affair. Little Scout ran without blinkers and sulked. In bis preceding start Little ScoutAwore blinkers, and finished close to the heels of Inferno and Yorkshire Lad, and in front xof such a good horse as Von Tronip. Shot Gun, which has never yet met defeat under track conditions such as prevailed today, galloped a fast band of opponents to a standstill, including the famous Dr. Gardner, in the closing race, at six furlongs. Fred Cook leaves tonight for Cincinnati for a three-day cut-in at Latonia, after which he will return to New York and make book on the opening day of the Sheepshead Bay meeting. Charles Grainger, ex-Mayor of Louisville and a member of the Kentucky State Racing Commission, left for Ids home today. Clerk of the scales Cornehlson Is seriously 111 and his duties are performed by Algernon Dalngerfleld. Sol Lichtenstein, who Is a very sick man, ha3 gone back to New York for treatment. Jockey Hlldebrand was set down this afternoon for three days by starter Cassidy. W. A. McKlnney, the present owner of Samson, announced that horse as a sure starter in Saturdays cup race. Miller has been engaged to ride him. Three of the get of August Belmonts stallion, Hastings, filled the positions in the first race today. The elder Redfern left for Brooklyn with his family, including Arthur Redfern, the jockey, tonight. Mr. Redfern says he. will go to England in the fall and seek an engagement for Arthur with some prominent English stable as first jockey.
