GOOD RULE FOR THE OWNER. The other day at Saratoga Jack Benpet engaged Louie Smith to ride one of his two-year-olds, and his orders were: "Louie, there Is 0 in the office for you for the mount. If you get away from the post in the first three there is 0 more coming. If you show in the first three at the end of a furlong it means 0 more. The same goes for into the homestretch, and at the finish it is 5 more if you show and a hundred if you win." Bennets colors trailed home in the ruck, and Louie got the 0 that was in the office. Next day Bennet met Louie and told him with all seriousness that a new rule had been passed whereby a rider was to deposit 0 and pay forfeit if be did not show prominent at the points specified. Smith listened attentively, then said: "A good rule, but Ill turn owner."
