PECULIAR POINT IN CONTROVERSY. New York, August 2S. The Great Autumn Steeplechase, the new ,000 race to be run for the first time on the second Saturday of the Sheepshead Bay meeting, Is already the subject of a controversy. It was the original idea to make the distance of the race three miles, and the entry blanks as first published ,niadc this the distance. Later it was decided to make the distance two and a half miles, and a correction was made before the advertisement of the closing of entries. It seems, however, that not all the subscribers to. the race received the notification of the change, and some of the entries were made on the original blanks. One of these nominators was . Harry S. Iage. Mr. Page, who has always been a sticker for long distances and heavy weights, says that he made his entries for a three-mile race, and now wants to know if the Coney Island Jockey Club will fulfill its part of the contract by giving a three-mile race. The case is a peculiar one, inasmuch as, according to the story of Mr. Page his entry for a three-mile race was accepted without question. As the dlstauccs for all steeplechases are not fixed definitely, but are always designated in the conditions as "about so-and-so," the association will probably overcome the difficulty through this clause.
