THIS YEARS HIGH-PRICED YOUNGSTERS. Seventeen thoroughbred yearlings were sold by auction this year for ,000 or more each, the highest price being 5,000. This was for the Watercress Rosette colt which was In the California consignment of J. B. Haggln, sold in June, and out of which six others were knocked down for ,000 or more. Breeders and horsemen, however, have generally been disinclined to accept as a standard of values the prices obtained at the Haggln auctions. They have set up the claim that many of this veteran breeders horses have passed through the ring and into the hands of his agents at excessive values with the result that the general average has appeared larger than the actual cash transactions would show. This may or may not be true. At any rate the yearlings are produced by Mr. Haggln and he probably feels that if there is satisfaction - in- disposing of his stock under arrangements entailing contingencies he is entitled to It, or that if there Is harm to come out of it he would be most affected. Support to the arguments of those who disapprove of the naggln methods Is found In the fact that at the sale of the Bennington horses on Saturday last tho Watercress Teatro colt, which In June, had been knocked down to Newton Bennington on a bid of 4,000 was sold back to Mr. Haggln for ,00O and the Watercress-Colonial colt, which the Long Island real estate dealer had taken on a bid of ,000, was declared sold to John Mackey for ,000.
