DISCUSS MERITS OF THREE GREAT MARES. There has been a lively discussion in the English sporting papers as to the relative merits of Sig-norina, Sceptre and Pretty Polly. Each of these great mares was supreme in her time, and each has. her advocates for the title of Queen of the Turf. On the record the admirers of Pretty Polly would seem to have the best of the argument. Slgnorina started eighteen times and won eleven; Sceptre started twenty-four times and won thirteen; Pretty Polly started twenty-three times and won twenty-two, and she may add to the score before she is permanently retired.
