GOOD WEATHER AND RACING AT EIMLICO. Lotus Eater Springs a Surprise by Running Away from the Heavily Backed Bobbie Kean Baltimore, Md., November 1. Opening day at Pimlico was in direct contrast to that expected by the officials and the racegoers of the Monumental city. Yesterday it looked as if the official prog-nostioator would be right when he said that the rain of the past few days was sure to Inst now-over, fate was good to the racing folk find Ibis afternoon was pretty nearly ideaL No better day could be desired for an opening excepting that late in the day, the wind became a trifle high. Never in the history of the sport here has there, been such promise of an excellent meeting. When Mort Ma-honey, on behalf of John Cavanagh, called for the books to weigh in thirty -eight responded. This was too many according to the size of the ring and the wishes of the management and but thirty were allowed to do business. They did riot have all the money to handle that they might have wished, but at the same time there was enough of it in the ring to keep them fairly busy. . . Racing here is a popular sport and as there was none of It in this section since spring, many people took advantage, of the opening and made the long trolley, trip to the course. Manager Biggs estimated that nearly fifty-five hundred people passed through the gates. Of this number a goodly portion was of the fair sex. The thing which caught the local people the most was the excellent starting of A. B. Dade. He was a welcome change to the bettors, for in .the past they have not been able to wager with any degree of confidence. The change from Mr. Maginness to Dade was the best thing the .association could do. Dade made perfect starts in all- of his races but in the.Jast. kittle Koerner caught him napping and while the start was a good, one he pot his mount .race, by his alertness. Koerner will be the star rider during the meeting. Ho is, under contract lo trainer Al Weston of the Clyde Stable and he rode three winners. Two of them were for the Clydes and the other was in the all scarlet of the Barbarity Stable carried by Lotns Eater. Lotus Eater proved a surprise in the Hotel Ker-naii purse. He was second choice to Bobbie Kean and the latter was very heavily backed by the local people. He is an Idol at Pimlico and Lotus Eaters, victory netted the books an avalanche of money. He simply made a show of Bobbie Kean by racing at bis head in the first half mile and then running away from him. At present the course is not fast. The recent rains had made it heavy over night, but it dried out well and by Saturday Superintendent Bren-nan expects the track to be in excellent condition. It Was pretty nearly an even thing Iwtween the books and the public. Only two choices won, but the small backing for the winners In the other races did not allow the layers to get away with much.
