REVIVAL OF A VETERAN. Golden Rules success in a sprint ;at Oakland the other day demonstrates that the veteran still retains quite a measure of the speed that gave, him a confident following on Chicago tracks in 1003. Outside of his two-year-old career Golden Rule was at Ills best that year and a sprinter of high class and great speed. It Is quite probable that nature meant him for a great racehorse, but infirmities developed late in the year when he was a two-year-old. kept him from the track for two years, and when he was returned to racing it was to figure as only capable of traversing short distances successfully at high speed. When a two-year-old Golden Rule was the property of Ed Corrlgan and quite the two-year-old crack of California in 1S99. He won twelve out of eighteen races that year and his successes included vlnnlng the Candelarla and Gebhard handicaps and the Schreiber, Corrlgan, "Racing and Olympic stakes at Oakland and Ingleslde, the Gebhard Handicap being the. only one of these events that survives as an annual stake race. After being brought east he changed ownership several times, but won many races for Corrlgan, F. W. Doss and Durnell and Herz successively. With, one exception all were purses., the exception being when he won the Flyaway Handicap at Worth over a heavy track October H. 1003. "It was worth ,G00 net. At his age it is hardly probable that Golden Rule will equal the performances of his more youthful days. But old horses run surprisingly well In California, as witness Princess TItanlas race yesterday. Such venerable friends as Golden Rule, Jake Ward, Water Cure, Duelist, Kenova, W. B. Gates. Major Tenny, Dewey, Princess Titanla and Royal Rogue, not to mention others, are still to be seriously considered in estimating racing possibilities. So far this is Golden Rules record: Starts. 1st.. 2d. 3d. Unp. Amt. 07 2S IS 13 2S 21,930
