OARSMAN WINS THE JONATHAN HANDICAP. Los Angeles Meeting Opens with Threatening Weather, but Big Crowd Sees- Good Sport. . Los Angeles, Cal., November 20. Racing at As cot Park opened with flattering prospects, despite the threatening and comparatively cool weather. A crowd of about 6,000 was present and enjoyed a good days siort. The booking, as in previous years, was presided over by George Rose, who set tht prices for the ring, fifteen other layers drawing in for two days. The betting, though not heavy was brisk, the public having much the better of the days play. Among the pencilers that drew in were Benny Falk, Roy Otfut, H. L. Jones, Sam Shoen, Jack Adklns and "Frisco" McManus. Much interest centered in the feature event, -tlK -Jonathan Handicap, which was won In. spectacular fashion by Louis Kempners Oarsman, "enerously supported by the public. It appeared up to the final quarter as if Arimo was going to make a runaway race of it, but the youngster tired when a sixteenth out and succumbed to Oarsman in the closing strides amid deafening shouts from the spectators. The owner of the winner, as has been the custom in former years, was "presented with a floral horseshoe. Secretary Boden was congratulated on his opening effort, although lie is somewhat handicapped by the mediocre class of horses here. Many stables are expected in the next few weeks, now that It is almost a certainty that the meeting will be run off as scheduled. Among those expected to have horses here in a short time are: W, J. Speirs, Lafe Block, R. Angarola, Billy Keating, Jerry Ma-honey, General Townes and Jini Boden. Judge Hamilton officiated in the stand. He was assisted by Ed Cole as associate and clerk of the scales P. P. Pomeroy. The pool boys wore caps and were taxed 0 a day eacli to do business, eleven drawing In.
