B0RGHESI WINS THE FEATURE AT OAKLAND. Tremendous Throng at Course Transportation Facilities Prove Inadequate New-Book on Handicap. Oakland, Cal., November 20. The Thanksgiving Handicap at a mile and a furlong was won in runaway style by Borghesi, Rudolph Spreckels recent ,00 acquisition, which was second choice in the betting. William Randall had the big Brutus Ledette horse trained to the hour and the stable commission Is said to have been a heavy one. Proper, for the third successive running of this stake, came out of it a big favorite, the Jennings horse put up a remarkable but unavailing race against a better horse. A peculiar angle to the betting developed after the announcement was made that Blue Eyes, posted as a starter, was withdrawn and twenty minutes allowed for a new book, was that the wise betting which had been confined to Corrigan and Ramus in the first book veered around completely and centered on Proper and Borghesi. Shot Guns defeat by Cruzados in the second race sit five furlongs was a hard blow to the plungers who had banked on his record in the mud for a little sure money. The start, which favored the Baldwin horse, was responsible for the result. Thirty-six books, including the field books, were barely able to handle todays business at the track. It is estimated that the attendance. was greater by 5,000 than on any previous occasion in the past history of the California Jockey Club. The congestion was so great that many were apprehensive of a panic. It was next to impossible to move around and thousands of intending bettors were unable to place their wagers. The transportation facilities were inadequate to handle the crowd and fully 5,000 persons walked all the way to the track. The grandstand will be enlarged to twice its present capacity next season and also moved back a hundred feet in order to afford more lawn space. J. Ranch was a visitor at the track. lie said that he had signed a contract just before he left Paris to ride next year for Jean Pratt, the chief steward of the French Jockey Club. The mare Blue Eyes was not at the track, otherwise the stewards would have forced P. Sheridan to start her in the handicap. The owner had simply forgotten to scratch her and will probably be fined heavily for such a serious oversight. Jack Martin lias bten engaged by. Sam HHdreth to do his local riding and. is already on his way here. Tommy Clark is the. most recent addition to the jockey colony at Oakland.
