YOUTHFUL RIDER WINS CUP. MR. WRIGHT, OF BALTIMORE, IS REGARDED AS A STAR AMONG AMATEURS. He Pilots New York with Knowledge and Skill Miller Gets Home in Front with Three of His Mounts. "Washington, D. C, November 30. Mr. Wright, of Baltimore, the youngest qualified gentleman rider in the country, won the Amateur Cup at Bennings this afternoon, clearly outriding and outgeneralling his older rivals among the amateurs by getting New York home a comparatively easy winner. The prefix in front of his name on the jockey board should stand for Master Wright instead of mister, for he is a youth of seventeen years and weighs only about 110 pounds. lie has been a. regular attendant at the races here, as his father is interested in racing to the extent of campaigning a small stable, mostly jumicrs, and those who saw the chunky lad in knickerbockers did not recognize him as a rider of sufficient merit to give him a standing among the professionals if he chose to make a business of riding, lie followed the leaders closely to the head of the stretch, skinned the rail with New York and rode like a fiend until he had taken a safe lead, but was content to take matters easily in the last half furlong, when the opposition was effectually disposed of. lie was loudly applauded when he went to the stewards stand . to receive from S. S. How-land the cup. that goes to the rider of the winner. It was a massive silver affair and looked to be almost as big as the rider who won it. Young Wright is a member of one of the Baltimore Hunt clubs and is as much at home on a jumper as on a Hat racer. He has been riding since he was big enough to sit on a horse and looks like a coming leader among the amateur riders. This was the last day but one of the eastern racing season. The attendance was excellent, considering it was the day after a holiday. The public had no reason to regret the day, either, as three favorites and three well backed second choices were returned winners. Jockey Miiler took a brace today, riding three winners and two place horses. He leaves Sunday for California to ride for Thomas n. Williams at Oakland. . John Boden bought Niblick during the morning and the horse carried his colors in the Amateur Cup. He will be shipped with other horses trained by James Boden to Ascot Park early next week. A. L. Aste has sold Soprano to Mrs. James McLaughlin, Jr. and the lilly will be raced at New Orleans.
