SHIELDS MAY PUT H0LSCHER TO JUMPING. Thinks the Lamplighter Three-Year-Old Will Make Good in Races Through the Field. Washington, D. C, December 3. By his victory in the Maximum Stakes Saturday Holscher has duplicated the success of Ben Crockett at Bennings last fall. Bon Crockett won the Washington Cup and the Maximum for William Shields and Holscher has done likewise. Mr. Shields considers Holscher a much better horse than Ben Crockett. Holscher has demonstrated that he is a superior long distance horse. While lie has appeared sore when going to the post here, he has no visible signs of leg trouble. His owner is of the opinion that he is rheumatic. What to do with Holscher next season the young Canadian has not definitely decided, but he is half inclined to make a cross-country horse of him. Holscher is a big, robust colt, sixteen hands high. Young Shields is convinced he will go any distance, and he believes he will handle steeplechase weight handily. Alex Shields, who was a cross-country trainer and rider of skill long before he took up tlat racing, says that Holscher will make an ideal jumper. The elder Shields says, in fact, that if the Lamplighter three-year-old takes kindly to jumping lie will come pretty close to sweeping the decks next year. Both he and his son believe that Holscher can win any Champion steeplechase if he starts fit. William Shields will have an excellent opportunity of finding out here at AVashington during the winter just what Holscher can do in the jumping Hue, for he has determined to remain here until next spring.
