JUDGE POST A SURPRISE. WINS MAGNOLIA SELLING STAKES FOR BURLEW and ONEILL AT 10 TO 1. 1 Coincident Takes the Juvenile Race, with i Whisk Broom Unplaced — Much Crowd-inn — Excitement Is Injured. New Orleans. [4k, January 5. -The second period of the Crescent City Jockey Clubs winter meeting ended today and on Monday the loral racing scene will shift to City Park for two weeks. The card for the closing day was a good one. Its feature was the Magnolia Selling Slakes, with a handicap at six furlongs, and the race tor two year olds as si i -otidary attractions. The other four raws had too many entries for this course and. as a result of the crowding, they were not truly run. In each instance the best horse was defeated. For the first time this m inter Burlew and ONeill placed their dependence on a single horse in a stake race. They were represented by Judge Post in the Magnolia. On previous showing, he was lightly regarded l y the heeeanakera, who willingly gave 10 to 1 against him at post time. Columbia Girl was always most in demand, though her price of :; to 1 remained stationary throughout the betting. Of the others Knvoy was the most fancied. Judge Post proved a surprise. Going out soon after the start and forcing a fast pace he raced Rather Royal into subjection and after assuming the lead lasted long enough in the terrific drive that followed through the stretch to beat Envoy. The latter was much the heat and had a. rough trip in the early stages, while through the final furlong he was almost pinned against the inner rail. With clear sailing Envoy wouhl have won off by himself. Columbia Girl, under a bad ride, ran a good race, but could do no lx-tter than finish third. In the handicap the crowd showed their diapproval of the judges placing Toboggan first by continuous hissing ami shouts for Charlie Eastman. These two put up the tightest finish of the meeting. They ended the race so closely together that it was a difficult BUtter to separate thorn. Coincident, owned by YA. EL Snyder, made the two year-old problem here more difficult by winning handily. Whisk Kroom and Work-a-Pay. both win-nets of their previous rares, were considered the heat of the ticld. but, they even failed to linish among the placed horses, second money going to Ida May and the small portion to her stabie mate liarney. The latter was probably the best. She was sharply cut off s x n after the start and when straightened out for the stretch run closed a big gap aider punishment. In addition to winning the baby race with Coincident. V. II. Snyder also palled down a purse with Palloday. Both were ridden by R. Lowe. Thirty-six bookmakers were in line and did a splendid business. Choices were successful in three racca, but the other failures allowed a handsome margin for the tiooks. The judges announced after the poor showing of J. W. ONeill that they had removed the ban on jockey Bedell and he will be allowed to ride for others than his contraet employer. Jockeys Trueman and Knglander were each fined 5 by the starter for disobedience at the post. lackey Mountain was again in a mix up and barely escaped serious injury. While riding Excitement he was crowded into the fence and his boot almost torn off. Exeiteincnt was badly cut aixiut the sides and leg and bled profusely.
