NOTES OF THE TURF. Jesse Lewisohn, the bookmaker, is to undergo an operation. He has an ailment of the stomach. Kassil, the steeplechaser trained by William Garth for Al Stokes, has bowed a tendon and will have to go into retirement. Essex II., having won all of the hunt races in sight for Dion Kerr, is to have a rest after which he will be raced in open steeplechases. The Suburban Handicap had twenty starters in J 884, 1SS0 and 1SS7. The smallest fields were In 1S!5 and 1904, when there were only six to race. George Mcltoberts, the bookmaker, has returned to Latonia from Denver. He says there were thirty-one lwoks on at Overland Iark and that was too many. The stable of Colonel Robert Neville was shipped from Brookllne to Buffalo. After the meeting at Kenilworth Iark they will go to Saratoga. Mr. McCann is the star of the jumpers in the Neville barn. Delcanta, winner of the Kensington Steeplechase, Is a hot weather horse and one that requires much work. He should be a hard horse to beat from now on in short races when the weight is not excessive. Some bad money is in circulation at Latonia. Bookmaker Fontelieu took what he thought were two genuine 0 bills, but examination showed t"hat a 0 bill and a bill had been split and so pasted to make the two 0 bills. A Dublin cablegram says Itichard Croker has recovered from the effects of his cold contracted at Epsom Downs on Derby Day and is now engaged in preparing Orby for the Irish Derby, which is to be run at the Curragh next Wednesday. The order barring the steeplechaser Bonfire from all save his stake engagements at Kenilworth has beeu revoked by the ofiicials of the Buffalo track. Dr. Farley, the track veterinarian, found that Bonfire had injured one of his legs in striking a fence and this caused him to quit in his last race. George J. Long says Sir Huons lameness is not serious. "The veterinary tells me that Sir Huons tendons are all right," said Mr. Long at Latonia Thursday, "and he will be trained for racing In the fall." Mr. Long said that iie believes Arcite has a better chance iu the Tidal Stakes today than he would have had in the Suburban and for that reason Arcite was declared put of the big handicap.
