BLUE PIRATE AS A JUMPER. WINS FIRST TIME OUT THROUGH THE FIELD AT LATONIA. Butler Is Caught Napping on Hazel Patch, Pickens Is Slow with Beau Brummel and Holtman Is Hissed. , r-j Cincinnati, O., July 3. Blue Pirate, making his first appearance as a jumper, easily disposed of his opponents in" the steeplechase at Latonia this afternoon. He won as his rider pleased. Ihj fenced cleanly and assumed the lead on call. John Dillon, carrying top weight, 150 pounds, made a game effort to overhaul the winner in the stretch. Class Leader finished third. Grey Plume, ridden by Harnett, fell at the first obstacle and the rider sustained a fracture of li is collarbone. Snbador broke down after getting over the hurdle in the stretch. At the start of the fifth race at a mile, Butler was caught napping and got Hazel Patch away slowly and in a tangle. Pickens also was not alert with Beau Rruiiimel and several of the fast breakers instantly secured an advantage. The disgruntled backers of these two horses immediately began hissing starter Holtman and prolonged it until after the finish. The Clansman was at his best and had little trouble in winning by a big margin in the fast time of 1:39. "This reminds me of some of the California times," remarked Judge Hopper, -while the crowd was hissing. "They are unreasonable. The start was by no means had. In fact, I would say that it f was almost good." Fair-minded horsemen who observed the send-off agreed with the expression of opinion of Judge Hopper. James Ross has been succeeded as trainer for the stable of Martin Doyle, owner of Ovelando, by Fred Groesch. Pinkolas showing in the third race was sparkling, and he will no doubt give a good account of himself in future races. Jockey L. Williams, who recently arrived here, gave a good riding exhibition on Solly M. in the second race. He will be much in demand by owners. His riding weight, however, will be a serious drawback as he is fast growing and scales 10S pounds.
