GREAT FILLY STAKES CANDIDATES. The Great Filly Stakes, which will be run at Sheepshead Bay next Wednesday afternoon, is in respect to value the most considerable event of the meeting for two-J-ear-old fillies. It attained its greatest value in Its first year when its net return was 3,975. It was won that year by Leonora Lor-lng with Blue Girl second, but the latter was subsequently awarded the ,stakes, because a protest against Leonora Lorlng for incorrect registration of ownership was sustained. From the high value point of that year the stake declined to ,055 in 1905 when Running Water was first. Last year it netted II. I. Whitney ,305 when Killaloe unexpectedly defeated Court Dress. It will be worth over 2,000 net this year. No two-year-old lilly of 1907 enjoys that undisputed supremacy which Colin has won in the list of colts. Probably the majority of turfmen consider Notasulga best, hut she is not in the Great Filly. But most of the first Might of the year are eligible and it seems probable that a highly interesting contest of doubtful issue is impending, witli from twelve to fifteen starters almost a certainty. In Red Bonnet, Meggs Hill and Masquerade James R. Keene has a trio of proved merit. Besides his public performers Stamina and Adriana, H. P. AVhit-ney is represented by Jersey Lightning, by Hamburg Daisy F., and Bonnie Star, by Star Shoot Bonnie Blue 1L, neither of which lias started. The former is reported to be very fast. August Belmonts Half Sovereign, a somewhat unlucky filly, has proved herself one ot the best of the year. Julia Powel won the rich Spiuaway Stakes at Saratoga and is said to be a remarkably handsome filly. Her speed has been amply demonstrated. Lady Winifred is a stake winner and tremendously fast. Bouquet, by Kinley Mack, dam the exquisite mare Briar Sweet, is another that has evoked the admiration of all horsemen who have inspected her and for all anyone knows, may have no superior of her age. These, with Beckon, Aimee C, Keep Moving, Polly Watts, Mayfield, Desirous and Sungleam arc the probable starters and it is quite certain that any student of form who attempts to analyze their performance cannot fail to arrive at the conclusion that the Great Filly of this year appears to be a very open race. . The following table of performances will serve to show what the probable contestants have done so far tliis year: Horse. Sts. 1st. 2d. 3d. Unp. Won.
