ROSEBEN SiTIIE i BRILLIANT. WONDERFUL RACING THE BIG GELDING HAS DONE IN FIVE SEASONS. Son of Ben Strome and Roseleaf a Speed Marvel Undoubtedly the First of American Sprinters by Performance. New York, September 20. Roseben Is still alive, and though in great danger, may survive. His temperature was lower this afternoon, and trainer Frank Weir thinks the veterinarians may pull "The Big Train" through. Every care and attention is being given the sick horse. Roseben, the greatest sprinter that has ever been known to the American turf, was near the point of deiith Thursday night from partially devel- oped blood poisoning, a wounded loot being the danger point. Yesterday a turn for the better rewarded the assiduous ministrations of the skilled veterinarians attending him and, while not out of danger, hope for his recovery is entertained." If he does recover, it is probable that he will be retired from racing for this year. Such great sprinters as Voter. Kingston, Gerald-ine. Lady Amelia, Hamburg Belle and others have had their thousands of admiring followers in their days of glory, but their fame pales before that of the mighty "Big Train." Not one of them could have taken up 147 pounds and run three-quarters of a mile in 1:113, or 12G pounds and cover seven furlongs in such marvelous time as 1:22. Yet Roseben did both and could have run faster on each occasion. Roseben lias his well defined limit. He can run a fast mile, hut no more. But up to seven furlongs is his true distance and to that point, when thoroughly tit. it is doubtful if his equal has ever been scin in action in any country. The complete racing record of this tremendously fast and weight-carryir.g-thorougb.bred is printed In this issue and no student of turf lore has ever had the privilege of scanning its equal as a story of remarkable performances: Roseben, h. g, by Ben Strome Roseleaf. 1903.
