By reason of racing often through many seasons occurs now and then that a horse acquires a nickname denoting endurance of extraordinary character. The fine old campaigners of other days, Blitzen and Logan, each in this way acquired the title of the "iron horse." Blitzen was campaigned east and west by "Pa" Bradley and Logan by Alex Shields. Logan at one time was vested with the reputation of having won over a hundred races and the assertion that he did so is even now occasionally found in mistaken print. He. did not win many but he won enough. Usually the horse that Is campaigned for many years is a slaving selling plater, but both Blitzen and Logan were high-class horses of great speed up to any distance, and at home in any sort of going, Blitzen in particular being a remarkable mud runner. Logan was grandson of Vandal and Blitzen a grandson of Leamington. The record of Logan follows: Logan, b. h, by Voltigeur Pert. Year. Age. Sts. 1st. 2d. 3d. Unp. In hands of liner quality Blitzen might have been one of the best three and four-year-olds the American turf has seen. Here is a table of Blitzens performances: r Blitzen, br. h, hy Blazes Germania.
