ALL OYER AT WASHINGTON. F E HOWARD SHEAN WINS THE LAST RACE OF THE EASTERN SEASON OF 1907. II o of Beauclere Triumphs Decisively in the Lonq h Distance Maximum Stakes Bellwether t: Repeats Kara Again Winner. c c Washington, D. C, November 30. The eastern t racing season closed with this, the thirteenth and o last, day of the Washington Jockey Cluhs meet- a a ins:. Tour of the six races on the program for , decision were contested hy large fields and there 1 were few withdrawals. The feature of the after- y noon was the eighth renewal of the Maximum a Stakes. The weather was line, hut cool and the i track fast. A large crowd was in attendance, but j: the sport did not arouse the interest and en- thusinsm which prevailed Thursday and Friday. Four favorites won today, however, and the public v choices in the first and last races both finished t second, so that, all in all, the people were well i satisfied with themselves and the meeting just closed. The first race was for three-year-olds and over at a mile and Thistle-dale was made the favorite, i lie set a fast pace and led to the stretch turn, where Brussel brought Kaston up with a rush and i won going away. Thistledale tired badly in the i last furlong, but saved second place from the fast closing Panique. St. Jeanne, the second choice, followed the leader closely to the stretch and then ic tired. 1 The Colt stable finally won another race after : a five unsuccessful attempts, when trainer Daly sent Kara to the post an odds-on favorite in the second race. The race for the first turn of the field was i between Kara and Essex II., but Kara came away from the Kerr horse in the last turn and held his advantage to the end. Six scratches still left fifteen two-year-olds to : go in the third race, of which I.ellwethcr, on his last performance, when thousands were taken from the ring, was again made the favorite and easily defeated Trey of Spades. The race at all times was strictly between these two. but I?ell- ; wether proved much the best in the closing drive. Trey of Spades finished five lengths in front of Omnipotent, which narrowly escaped with third place, just getting up to nose out Iteardall in the last strides. ISeauclere repeated his performance in the Washington Cup in the Maximum Stakes, which is the longest race and the last stake of the year here. The running of the race was very interesting to watch, as the field of six thrice circled the course in constantly shifting positions. Beauclere and Ironsides were nearly equal choices in the betting and the public anticipated the outcome, as the horses finished exactly as the prices of the forty-three layers indicated. Ironsides led for the first two miles on sufferance, as Swain was compelled to use all his strength to hold ISeauclere in restraint. Wheh beginning the last time around he gave Beauclere his head, the courageous horse went to the front with a rush, and after the turn into 1he stretch simply cantered under a pull, ISeauclere fighting for his head, and it appeared at times as if lie would throw his exhausted rider over his head. Beauclere passed the judges stand while the excited throng in the grandstand cheered both horse and rider. Ironsides was easily second best and finished six lengths in front of Banker, which caught the tiring Right Royal in time to take third place by a neck. The condensed history of the Maximum Stakes is as follows: Year. Winner. A. Wt. Jockey. Val. Time. 1000 Rochester 3 07 Brien ,125 5:41 1001 Carbuncle 4 104 Redfcrn ... 1,100 5:35 1002 Duoro 5 101 Cannon 1,1S5 5:37 1003 Carbuncle 0 111 T. Swain .. 1,155 5:30 Kempton won the fifth race after being restrained in the first half and then unnecessarily ridden out at the finish. He was at a good price, for u favorite. George G. Hall set the early pace and in a Same finish, with jockey Smith trying to again overtake the winner, finished three lengths before Millstone. Millstone ran a good race, closing a big gap in the stretch. Howard Shcan was withdrawn from the first race and sent in the last race of the day, which he won by a head from Poquessing and the fast coming Samuel H. Harris a close up third. This race was contested by a field of fairly good class horses, but it was considerably marred by the withdrawal of the recent winners. Miss Crawford, Comedienne and Ivanhoe. Everything in the race received some support and there was little variance in the prices laid against the different starters. The disappointment of the race was the bad showing of Oraculum, which retired after a brief display of his usual speed. Most of the regulars will leave tonight on the Cavanagh train for New York, while the horsemen with stables in training, will either go to New Orleans tomorrow, or put the horses by until the spring meeting opens here, the last week in March. The victory of Bellw.ether in the third race gave the bookmakers a shock whicli will cause them to remember closing day here all whiter.
