NOTES OF THE TURF. Ernest C. Lemontagne, owner of the Chelsea Stable, is in Washington to supervise the removal of the horses from the track after the close of the meeting. Luigi Masnada, the Italian steeplechase rider, who was very successful on the Canadian circuit this season, has arrived at New Orleans, where he will remain for the winter. It is reported that the Los Angeles Racing Association has employed Dr. J. J. Ogle, a New York veterinary, as track veterinarian at Santa Anita Park during the coming meeting. In the future bookmakers at New Orleans will use a different style of slate card than they have been using. It will be of white paper and printed in larger type, so their patrons can more easily read names of horses and prices. Fred Gerhardy, who is officially connected with several Canadian tracks during the racing season, is in Los Angeles for the winter. Mr. Gebhardy does not expect to take more than a recreative Interest In the Santa Anita Park meeting. The two-year-old bay colt Contact, by Bathampton Touch," which trainer James Boden took to Los Angeles shortly after the close of the Pinilico meeting, was sick when the car arrived at Ascot Park and died the next morning. John E. Madden, it Is said, has abandoned his plan to go to Europe this winter with his two boys. Ho now intends to divide his time between New York, AVashiugton and Hamburg Place at Lexington, Ky. His yearlings will be wintered at the Benning track. Jockeys McDaniel and Notter, who were the leading riders of the Washington Jockey Club meeting, which closed yesterday, will ride in New Orleans this winter. McDaniel will ride for Buriew and ONeill, while C. R. Ellison will make all engagements for Notter. Notwithstanding the reports circulated by some turf writers, the eastern system of betting as used at City Park, seems to be favored by the layers. A vote of the bookmakers was taken Friday 011 their own initiative and only four were found to be iu favor of the old style booths. There is talk in racing circles at Washington that the officials of the Washington Jockey Club will try and placate Joe Marrono against bringing suit against them for barring him and the horse St. Joseph from the course for alleged "doping" of the horse In a race at that track last Saturday. Jockey George Swain has decided to ride at New Orleans during the winter and will join the II. 1. Whitney stable in New York upon its return from winter quarters at Aiken, S. C. Swain lias improved considerably in his work in the saddle during the Benning meeting and it is largely due to the coaching lie received from F. E. Gardner. It is said that S. N. Hexter has made arrangements to take fifteen horses to,. Mexico for winter racing. He says there is hardly a hacienda in Mexico now that has not two or throe American thoroughbreds and real -horse racing is becoming a popular sport. The horses he expects to take across the Rio Grande arc destined for Mexican breeding establishments after their racing days are over. Max Ilirseh, who is training Beauclere for J. V. Lemaire, the New York turfman, was a jockey riding for Hennen and David Morris not so many years ago. He was first brought out by the late AVyndliam Walden of the Bowling Brook Farm, near Baltimore. It is said that Mr. Lemaire, since Hirsch won the Washington Cup and Maximum Stakes with Beauclere, may decide to race a more pretentious stable next year.
