i 1 , ROME RESPESS GOOD CAMPAIGNER. Six Shooters Successful Career Over the Tracks of the Middle West. In 1901 "Rome" Respess bought a three-year-old colt by Sir Dixon Kentucky Belle III., called Six Shooter, from C. Fleischmanns Sons. Aside from Dick Welles this was the best racer Respess ever owned. As a two-year-old he started five times in the Flcischmann colors and failed to land a race, but finished second once and third once. He made his debut in a purse race at Gravesend, where he finished third to Vouch and Fleetwing. He finished second in his next start in the Woodcock Stakes, at Sheepshead Bay, to Demurrer, and third in his next essay in the Sapphire Stakes at the same track. In this effort he ran a creditable race behind Conroy and Bellario. In his next two attempts he ran unplaced, concluding his performances as a two-year-old. Starting for the first time in the colors of Respess at narlem, Six Shooter, as a three-year-old, ran third to Lady Schorr and Operator in the M. Lewis Clark Stakes. Then came the classic American Derby at Washington Park, which the game little Robert Waddell won. Six Shooter, well up with the leaders for a mile, stumbled and nearly fell on the far turn and was never afterward" a factor. Six Shooter ran second to Robert Waddell in the Sheridan Stakes, being beaten a half length in a drive by that game little horse, which was almost invincible during this Washington Park- meeting. After running unplaced in the Great Western Handicap and finishing second in a purse race at Washington Park, he was taken over to Hawthorne, where at his first attempt he defeated Argregor, Flying Torpedo and others by eight lengths. Two other purses fell to his credit following this. Both were at one mile and were run respectively in 1:405 and l:otJ. His next victory was in the Northern Handicap at Hawthorne, where he conquered such high-class performers as Jiminez, Pink Coat, Hernando, George Arnold and others, running the mile and a quarter in 2:05J. In this race he was never a contender until the stretch was reached where he made up much ground and, finishing with a grand rush, won by a nose but drawing out. Six Shooters next stake engagement was in the Oak Park Stakes at Harlem, where he was beaten a nose by Silurian at a mile and an eighth in 1:52 j. Tommy Knight, through over-conlidence, really threw the race away on Six Shooter, as he appeared an easy winner. After running second to George Arnold in the Twentieth Century Handicap at Harlem he finished unplaced in the Fall fepecial at Worth, his last race of the year. Six Shooter won his first start as a four-year-old, a purse race at Harlem, and was then taken to Washington Park, where he finished second in the Oakwood Handicap, on a heavy track to that well-known mud performer, Aladdin. His next start was in the Great Western Handicap, in which he defeated Flying Torpedo, Nitrate and others on a heavy track. He suffered defeat in both the Young and Wheeler Handicaps at Washington Park and was then sent to- Harlem, where he was victorious in a purse race at a mile and a sixteenth. Next ho was sent for the Harlem Handicap at one and one-eighth miles,, carrying top weight of 115 pounds, but could not run freely in the heavy going and was beaten off. Starting for the first time on the northern circuit Six Shooter captured the City Suburban Handicap at Buffalo, defeating Circus, winner of the Montgomery Handicap that year, Aladdin and other good ones. He did not win again this year, although he finished second in his last three starts, namely, to Hunter Raine in a purse at Morris Park, beiug beaten a head, to Articulate at Aqueduct, and to Mackey Dwyer at the same track, again losing by a head. Six Shooters record as a five-year-old was a creditable one, winning three races and being unplaced but twice in nine starts. Making his first start at Harlem in a seven furlongs dash, he won in a canter by four lengths from good opposition in the fast time of 1:254. Then came a second to Dr. Stephens at the same track at a mile and an eighth, run in 1:52J. Six Shooter carried 115 pounds to ninety-seven on Dr. Stephens in this race. Res- pess then shipped him to Washington Park, where he won a purse race from good ones at a mile and twenty yards, run in the record time of 1:40. Starting again in the Wheeler Handicap, won by Jack Rattlin, run on a heavy track, Six Shooter failed to finish in the money, the going militating against his chances. The rich Twentieth Century Handicap was his next start, which resulted in a decisive victory in the remarkably fast time of 1:5SJ for the mile and three-sixteenths. Six Shooter was far baqk in the early part of the race, but came witli a great burst of speed in the final quarter and won going away by two lengths. The value of this stake to the winner was 7,170. Dr. Stephens again took the measure pf this good . .son of Sir Dixon, at Harlem this time". Then he suffered defeat by Lady Jocelyn at Worth in a mile and a sixteenth race, run in 1:40. nis last start of the year was for the Thanksgiving Handicap at Latonia, where he finished third to Haviland and Reservation in a hotly-contested race. Six Shooter started in but four races in his six-year-old career, the first being in the valuable Worlds FairIIandicap at St. Louis and won by that good mare. Colonial Girl. Six Shooter was again unfortunate to have to contest for the rich prize on a heavy track, or there might have been a different story to tell. A purse race next fell to him in a canter by four lengths at the Fair Grounds, the mile being made in 1:40. After finishing second in a purse race at three-quarters of a mile by a head, he essayed again "to win the Twentieth Century Handicap, but failed in the attempt, finishing sixth. At seven years of age Six Shooter was still a good horse and won many races for his owner, and also suffered defeat in some, notably a mile race at City Park, where he succumbed to Coruscate in 1:39J. He won at a mile at the same track in the fast time of 1:.9; won at Latonia the same distance in 1:394, and captured three more purses in fast time gefore he ended his carrer of the season. As a veteran of eight years Six Shooter was raced but four times, and was successful in one of his efforts, a purse race at Latonia at seven-eighths of a mile. His last appearance as a racer was at Douglas Park, Louisville, where he displayed a sour disposition and ran a poor race among selling platers. After this came his retirement.
