BELL STAKES TO LEE ROSE. CRACK COLT OVERCOMES GREAT SPEED OF ROSE QUEEN IN GRAND STYLE. May Amelia an Easy Victor — A. Muskoday and Ten Oaks Prove Decided Surprises — Pajaroita Runs a Very Fast Three-Quarters. v Oakland. Cal.. March 21.— The rich Bell Stakes, for two-year-olds, was decided at Oakland today under the most favorable conditions. Ten of the highest class juveniles in training here faced the starter for this important fixture, including Lee ■ate and Rose Queen, respectively the best colt nai filly thus far developed here this season and this brilliant pair had tlie race between them. Both dr w" outside positions at the ost and broke sim-ultanously from a standing start. The filly, however, left her big rival as if he was anchored aud in an incredible burst of speed, established a lead of ten 1 ngths over her nearest opponent before the race had progressed a furlong. It se med any odds almost that she would seine home alone, but the giant St. Avonicus youngster loomed up with a rush in the stretch and overhaul d and passed the tiring daughter of Kingston — White Rose with an irresistible and dazzling finishing sprint. Lucky Baldwins Del Ouzador finished a good third, going with rare speed and resolution. The big brother of Cruzados has all the earmarks of a coining cracker-jack. The condensed history of the Bell Stakes is as follows: Year. Winner. Wt. Jockey. Val. Time. 1!*02 Artvis 110 OConnor ...440 1:00 l!»o:; Rowena 107 Waterbury. 2,20u 1:04 ISOt Arisbc 112 Bullman .. 2.4S0 1:04 UK 8b Wilfred US K. Jones .. 2.. "SO 1:01 1«J 0*Native Son 110 E. The card was a rarely attractive one and contained besides the stake fixture fwo good features of secondary imiiortance in the Sonoma Handicap and the Tolenas Handicap. Roth furnished interesting contests, the former going to A. Muskoday. th • extreme outsider and the other to the well-backed public choice, Pajaroita. Gemmells retirement from the closing race was an enforced one, due to his owners inability to secure jockey W. Knapp to ride him. In the opinion of experts it was just as well for Gemmell that he was out of the race, for he would surely have tHen beaten by the winner, which proved a veritable speed marvel today. The attendance was approximately 10.000. and fortv layers drew for positions in the big ring. Race-goers had a little the best of the argument with the layers with th- successes of three favorites, one second choice, aud two outsiders which were accorded moderate support.
