C Lj Al of in on It of of to s t r t fc i s 1 i 1 i : I I CLOSED AT DOUGLAS PARK. LAST DAY OF THE MEETING MARKED BY BIG-ATTENDANCE AND BETTING. Muller Defoats Colloquy and Berwick with Ease Belleview Takes the Lonr Distance Race. Louisville. Ky.. October 17. The getaway day attendance at Douglas Park excelled all former crowds the present meeting almost double. Pine weathei-and a splendid card, containing as it did, the Vic Loreh cup race at two miles, and a handicap at three-quarters that brought out three of the best western sprinters, was the magnet that tempted the outpouring, aside from the fact that It was the last opportunity of the season of witnessing the runners action here. The big crowd was also in a speculative mood and financially it was by far the greatest day that the Tiouglas Park management has experienced during the present term of racing. Under favorable conditions this would have proven one of the best meetings since the days of Washington Park. Good horses met in competition daily for ridiculously short purses and the contests ensuing appealed to the most blase race-goer. Despite all the aid that the owners tendered to boost the meeting, the association, it is reported, will be called to meet a deficit placed approximately at 2,000. is little wonder that the mutuel machine style betting, which is held In some quarters to be accountable for this state of affairs, should be in disfavor with the managers. While the Vie Loreh cup race was the main feature of the afternoon in a racing way. the three-quarters dash, in which Berwick. Colloquy and Al Muller measured strides, was vested with more interest on account of the frequent claims of superiority advanced by the respective supporters of cacn the trio. Despite having to concede much weight his rivals, Berwick was made a strong choice. Colloquy was also better supported than Al Muller. The latter, at the weight assigned and in his present good form, showed clearly that he was best, and after following the speedy Colloquy closely for a fast half, shot by her with apparent ease and won by a decisive margin. The disappointment of the race was Berwick, which, despite Powers vigorous riding, failed to overcome the early lead established by the pair in advance and finished third. Colloquy holding him safe through a hard stretch drive. The Cup race was virtually a match between Belleview and Besterling. as the others engaged in the race were thoroughly beaten after going tho first circle of the track. Besterling. like Berwick was considered one of the best speculative chances jf the afternoon, but was easily taken into camp by V Belleview. on which J. Butler rode skillfully ami outgeneraled his older rival. Glasner. G. J. Long managed to annex a purse, the first since leaving New York, wheu his Balbus. a prohibitive favorite, cantered home in the opening race In front of a baud that he clearly outclassed. Mrs. Sewall and Miss Crittenden furnished a strenuous struggle in the second, the former just winning iu the last stride. CIvita. the overwhelming choice, ran disappointingly and failed to land among the placed ones, third place going to W. E. Apulegates Sempronlum. The latter showed a meritorious performance by coming from last place during tlio stretch run. lie and others of the same stable are booked to start for California tomorrow, where they will probably capture a full share of the purses to be decided during the winter. Charlie Rowe uncovered a good thing in the closing race when Orphan Lad spreadeagled the others and won easily from Lady Baldur. The two-year-old race, fifth on the card, went to Irfaneh in impressive style, she winning from L. A. Cellas supposed best. Marse Abe. with the Corrigan filly. Anne McGee. a respectable third. All the horsemen who have taken part in the eighteen-days meeting here, with the exception ot a very few. will send their strings to Latonia during; the next couple of days, to be on hand for the meeting which begins there on Monday next. The all-absorbing topic among the horsemen at present is how long will the meeting last at Latonia. Many are still hopeful that the State Racing Commission will step down from the lofty stand they have taken in regard to the restoration of bookmakers. Tho horsemen are equally certain that the Latonia management will not recede from their stand of holding the meeting with books on. The outcome of thu case. If carried into the courts. Is problematical. Colonel Jack Chlnn. chairman of the State Racing Commission, has been appointed to serve an steward of the Racing Commission for the Latonla meeting. During the last term of racing at Latonia. Milton Young served in that capacity. Jockev Powers announced this afternoon that ho had ridden his last mount in this section for some time, as he departs to spend a week at his home, before going ou to California, where he will report to his contract employer. Barney Schreiber. J. J. Fleming will ship W. E. Applegates consignment of twelve horses to California tomorrow. Xred Cooks string of a dozen racers, including Lawrence P. Dalcv. Anna L. Daley. Johnnie Blake and Andy G inter, will be shipped at the same time.
