LEADING FRENCH STALLION DIES UNTIMELY. Was Sire of Mr. Vanderbilts Crack Colt Northeast Great Revenue from Mutuels in France. Paris. October 7. A great loss has fallen on the French turf by the death of the stallion, tferth, which occurred yesterday at the Haras du Nonant-le-Pin, and his owner. M. Caillault, will also be a heavy loser, for the horse was not insured. . Early this year Al. Caillault refused an offer or 0i.K0 from the Hungarian government for this stallion, delivery not to be made until he had completed his stud service in 1909, for which year his subscription . was full. Perths fee was ,000. For the last two years he has headed the winning stallion list. last year being credited with the sum of 1S.000 j won in stakes by his produce during the season, i He was the sire of Magellan. My Pet 11.. North- east, Sauge Pourpree, Sourdine and nearly thirty other winners. lie was only in his twelfth year. aud in tiie ordinary course had a great stud career : before him, for his two year-olds have proved theni- i selves some of the best of their generation. Perth was a son of War Dance, out of Primrose Dame, a mare bought by M. Ephrussi from the late Sir Iilundell Maples stud. He was born at the Haras du Gazon and sold as a yearling at Deauville for ,500. M. Caillault being the purchaser. He had a brilliant career on the turf, winning races over all distances, among his victories being the French , Derby aud the Grand Prize of Paris, but he had the I misfortune to fall lame when competing for tho 1 Ascot Gold Cup of 1900. This was his last race. His winnings on the turf amounted to nearly 00.-000. The cause of deatli was inllainmation of the kidneys. Last week the first symptoms were seen of something being wrong, and veterinary aid was requisitioned in vain. Strange to say. Omnium II. died under precisely the same conditions, all the other organs being perfectly sound. The reports that the gate money and the takings at the parl-mutuel offices have decreased this year have been greatly exaggerated. On Sunday, on the occasion of the Prix du Conseil Municipal, a sum of over 5,000 was taken at the Ixmgchamps turnstiles, -which was only 1908.sh00 less than the same day in 1900, which was a record. The turnover at the mutuels was 07,920. which was .0OO more than last year. Oii this subject the minister of agriculture has been interviewed, and he has produced statistics which show that the receipts have risen from 0,000,000 in 1902 to over 1908.sh0,000,000 in 1907. and the figures this year will be quite as large. The percentage of eight per cent, on those millions is a nice little sum to distribute hetween breeders and charities, and the minister of agriculture Is more than satisfied with the present condition of the- French turf and the national industry of horse breeding.
