When the Minneapolis of the Atlantic Transport Line sailed from New York Saturday bound for England, a large consignment of thoroughbred horses were a part of its cargo. Thirty broodmares belonging to James B. naggln, under the charge of John Mackay, IWere on board, consigned to the English market. - Handspring, from the MHlstream Stud, waif included In the shipment. Through an oversight jockey Russell was permitted to ride the 100 to 1 shot Valencia in the second race at Oakland last Thursday, while his contract employer. O. A. Bianchi, was starting his mare, Tawasentha, in the same race. According to the California rules of racing this is not permissible, for obvious reasons. The betting had been In progress for considerable time before the matter was called to the attention of the officials, and In view of the Improbability that Valencia would cut any figure In the running the judges decided to let Russell ride In the race rather than go to the trouble of ordering a change of riders with its attendant result of a new book.
