TIMES MADE AT SPRINTING DISTANCES. Fast Performances of the Present Year at a Half-Mile, Fivo-Fighths and Three-Quarters. The art of track conditioning has Troj?ressed so favorably during th past few years tlwt fast time over our race courses these days attracts no great attention. During the season which is fast drawing to an end some exceedingly fast time has been made at the different tracks throughout the country. l"cr horse to run a, iuilf in 4S or "better is considered a fast performance, but during the present year some thirty horses have accomplished this feat. All but one of this- number were two-year-olds, and that one, the three-year-old Smiley Corltett. with 110 lHinnds up. ran the fastest half-mihi of the year at the Seattle track, covering the distance in 40A. Itose Queen and Iiistowel have both done a half in 47J, wlule the fast youngster. Workbox. has stepped the same distance in 47 Hat. Five-eighths and three-quarters of a mile arc popular sprinting distances, and some exceptionally fast and interesting contests were seen at those distances during the present season. There -were twenty races at live-eighths of a mile that were run in less than 1:00. a truly remarkable record. Silver Stocking equaled the American ree-ord for the distance; when at Seattle on August 17 she ran live-eighths in oS2. Silver Stocking and Jeanne dArc have on two different occasions done this distance in less tlwn 1:00. A few years back a race at three-quarters in less than l:lo was considered exceptionally fast, but nowadays running the distance faster is of frequent occurrence. To tlu three-year-old. Nimbus, goes the credit for the fastest three-quarters run in this country, when, on August IS at Empire City, he astonished the turf world with a wonderful burst of speed and established a new American record for three-quarters of a mile, running the distance in 1:114. lie nearly duplicated this performance the following week when lie went the same distance in 1:11 J. Toupee and Early Tide both ran this distance in 1:11? and only recently Royal Tourist created a new track record at Oakland when he reeled off three-quarters in 1:115- The following tables show the fastest time made at one-half mile., lire-eighths mile and three-quarters mile from January 1 to December 10. together with name of horse, age, weight, track and date: Half Mile.
