NOT HOSTILE TO AMERICANS. John Porter, most famous of English trainers, when asked recently If lie thought there would be any action regarding the invasion of the British turf next year bv American trainers and jockeys, replied: "I til Ink not. providing the Americans are of the respectable class. The last invasion, with a few exceptions, was not altogether satisfactory. There was a strong suspicion that some trainers were in the habit of doping their horses before sending them to the post. I think this is a very pernicious liabit and injurious to the horse, and that no punishment would be too severe for trainers guilty of such practices. I have great respect for some American trainers, men of talent who have fought the game fairly and honestly and not altogether unsuccessfully. The United States lias sent us two fine jockeys In Dannv Maher and Tod Sloan. The latter was a genius. How sad to think he should be lost to the turf. Other American jockeys, such as the Reiff bovs and Skeets ifartin, .possess merit and have ridden with success both here and on the continent. But some followers of American jockeys have gone back to the States and I can assure you we can well spare them. It Is such men as these that bring the turf Into bad repute. I feel sure that the English Jockey Club and all. followers of the turf in Great Britain will gladly welcome owners, trainers and jockeys from America, those who choosQ to make a peaceful and honest invasion o the British turf."
