Oxnard had rather a disastrous experience with the mares he had sent over from America, for the eight that changed hands made only 25, all told. It would obviously have paid him to give the animals away, instead of going to the exjwnse of sending them all the way across the Atlantic to realize this beggarly sum. They were, however, in every respect an unattractive lot, and why they were sent to these sales is a matter that is beyond ones comprehension. The reception they have had will, however, serve a useful purpose if it convinces American breeders in general that they are likely to find the policy of dumping their surplus stock in our market rather a costly one." On the last day of the sales, Friday, December 11, twenty-eight broodmares were sold for John Mackey and J. B. Haggin. of Elmendorf Stud. They brought very much less than their value. H. Stanhope, of Kentucky, evidently missed fire. She turned up in the Newmarket sales as Mr. Stanhopes property and was sold to Captain Northcv-Hopkins for ,050. At the same sales Andrew Miller, of New York, offered the American stallion. Handspring, fifteen years old. by Hanover, out of My Favorite,, by Raydon and Frank Ilardlngo secured hlniTa bargain-for ,250. The notable sales were few. The Burton Studs black horse, 5. by Bill of Portland Opera Dance, by Macheath, went to the German government for ,750. Mrs. Langtrys old cup horse. Merman, went to the same stud through Count Lehndorff for ,500; J. B. Buchanan, the whiskey man. Tiald ,500 for Major Loders two-year-old chestnut filly. Lantana. by Cupid, out of Opulent, by Florentine. She only cost 50 as a yearling ami lias won six out of eight races she has contested, so the daughter of Cupid a sire deserving of good support has paid her late owners well. Baron Springer, of Austria, secured the prize broodmare of the sales, the lato Duke of Devonshires: six-year-old bay marc. Lilla, by St. Simon Melody, by Tynedale. She was offered at ,n reserve price of SlO.OOQ and IsIu foal to Galuule and fetched 4,000, the bldtjer against the Austrian nobleman being M. ,Cherl Hal-bronn. of Paris, a horse dealer of high class. The Goodwood Cup winner. Plum Tree, ,by Persimmon, out of Cauliflower, having been ksold privately to the French government for 5,000. did not come up. Among the Tully Stud mares. Bush dam of Knight of Tully realized ,750. Baron Springer securing her for Austria, and Mr. Gill gave ,000 for Fair Jean, a sister to Jeans Folly and half-sister to Black Arrow and Cherry; Lass. In the course of the five, days no fewer than 586 animals were sold under the hammer for 25,745, the average per head being nearly ,070. This average is not so good as that obtained last year. When the total for 49G reached 10,810. The table of riding records for the past five years of the principal winning jockeys of the past season hiay also be of interest at this time. It can be seen that racing is far from profitable to King Edward. The contest for the leading jockey honors among the steeplechase riders in England for the season or 190S has developed into a close and exciting struggle iKitwcen F. Mason and P. Cowley, with fifty-four and fifty-two wins respectively to their credit. As crosscountry racing in England continues throughout tin; winter, the result of this contest will not be known until after the first of the year, but the. following table shows the record of the twenty leading steeplechase jockeys from January 1 to December 5, inclusive: Jockey, Mts. 1st. In 190S 3,000 horses ran In England, starting 15.000 times, and winning 1.700 races worth about ,700,000. Of the 3,000 one-fifth were Irish-bred, but they won one-fourth of the total money run for. Thus GOO Irish-bred horses started 3.000 times, winning 400 races, value 25,000. It is a curious, but noteworthy fact that whereas the total number of runners. 3,000, started 15,000 times, giving an average of five starts per horse per annum, the figures work" out at exactly the same rate for the Irish-bred horses, the COO starting 3,000 times. These figures again come ont in the case of the foreign-bred horses, the seventy starting 350 times. As the result of an accident and breaking a leg, that good horse, Galashiels, had to be destroyed. Bred by the late Sir James Miller, and foaled in 1S95, Galashiels was a finely-bred bay horse by the celebrated Galopin. out of that very good mare, the One Thousand and Oaks winner. Thebais. He "was a fair racer, and has sired many winners, including Knead, Molly Shiels, Scotch Boy, Scotch Lad, etc. Racing folks have little idea of the amount of money to be won racing in Belgium nowadays; but it is considerable, as the leading owner there this year, the Vicomte do Buisseret, has won 7,675 in stakes on the fiat with his horses and ,900 over jumps, making 01,575 in all.
