Kv.. May 19. — John G. Greeners La-tonla Derby candidate, olambala. added further luster to his recent performances and strengthened his admirers lielief in his superiority our western three year-olds by tile impressive manner ill which he took the measure of Wintergreen and Miami in the special race today at a mile and a sixteenth. and which served as a preliminary trial for the Latonia Derby. In the estimation of most racing experts at the weight assignments of Wintergreoii. 110. Miami 108 and olambala 103, the Beapeaa colt held his rivals safe, and it was expected that he would only have a good -stiff gallop to ilis| ose of them. The tietring also indicated this lielief. for he was nearly a 1 to 2 favorite over bis opponents. The other colts, however, were by no means overlooked, the Tennessee delegation being especially sanguine that the Nashville-owned horse would be the winner. Lexingtons representatives were hopeful that Miami would reverse tile Kentucky Derliv running, but were not so firm in their belief in the Camden colts ability to take the measure of Winter-green. Wintergreen essayed to make the pace from the start and showed slightly in the lead when his surcingle split and caused the martingales to dangle momentarily, impeding his stride slightly, but l.. fore going to the clubhouse turn, the I nose tackle parted. He set a tertnendous pace for the first half, with Miami keeping him close company and Olambala. under a restraining ride, a short distance awn. After going three-quarters, the pace began telling oat Wintergr-en and Miami and. with the shortening of their strides. Olambala gained steadily, ultimately passing them on the stretch turn and drawing away into a cant, ring victory in the last furlong. The time. 1:4".. reduces the track record by one tilth of a second. Wintergreen. in a hard drive, held Miami safe for seoud plan all through the stretch, olambala was at once installed favorite for the Latonia Derby and his winning chances now appeal ar roaal to none. Wintergreens showing today was disappointing to his owner as well as to most horsemen. Th.-r- JW , no reasonable excuse to be offered for his failure other than that he may have met his master. He may reverse todays decision at the mile and a half distance when Olambala meets him in the Latonia Derby. T. C. McDowells good mare.
