It was one of the old Jerome Iark stakes, founded soon after the close of the Civil War. was moved over to Morris Iark when Jerome Iark passed away as a race tra.k and again to Belmont Iark when in its turn Morris Park ceased to he a home for the thorongh-bred. Katie Pease was the first truly great mare to win the Ladies and she was probably the equal of : ny subsequent winner, although the list embraces tin- names of such great blazing stars as olitipu, Persia. Miss Woodford, Firenze. Fides, Yorkville Belle. Brae Ctrl, Beldame. Perverse and Stamina, to say nothing of such other celebrities that were only placed as Fanny Lmilow. Nellie James. Zoo Zoo. Kica. Charity. Gloaming. Senorita. Lady Madge. Hatasoo and Audience. The Ladies, with its ,880 in added money, is one of the few really rich stakes surviviug the disaster wrought by the Hart Agnew law and is one of the inducements thai kept Maskette in this country when her stable-mates were sent to England.
