+ : + J CONDENSED HISTORY OF THE HAROLD STAKES J. ! 4. The Harold Stakes Is the oldest fixture for two-year-old colts and geldings of the western turf and will b" run for the twenty seventh time today. In net value to the winner It has never been conspicuous among the stake races of the country, but for all that it has usually been contested by a capital field and has been won by some sulisequently great race horses, Raceland. Ben Brush. Pink Coat and Sir Huou affording instances. Its first winner. General Harding, was a wonderfully good son of Great Tom — Lisa Davis and the pioperty of Sam Bryant, who afterwards won a fortune with Proctor Knott. General Harding was the M inner of nine races as a two-year-old and only once met defeat. Each of his nine victories was in a stake nice. He ileveloiied bad forelegs and was not so good as a three-year-old. but managed to win the Drexel Stakes at Washington Park. Another of the early winners that was thought to be a phenomenon was Bankrupt. He swept everything before him until he happened to meet Ban Fox and Blue Wing in the Horse Radars Stakes at St. Louis and it then became known that better two-year-olds than Bankrupt were in the west. The Harold Stakes is a race of interesting history and its record is as fellows: Year. First. Jockeys. Wt. Second. Wt. Third.
