There were four contestants for the ricli three-year-old fixture — Hilarious Joe Madden. Fayette and lractical. James K. Keenos coll was loyally supported by the pubiii and remained « stationary favorite at 4 to ."i throughout. Joe Madden, the logical second choice. receded by leaps and lioumls and closed at 6 to I. while from first to last Fayette, one of the disappointments of tie season, was the storm center of speculation. John K. Madden declared publicly that hlsliorse could not lose, that he had recently worked « mile «tilled up In 1:40. with the Carlton weigl.l of 122 pounds up. and that, moreover, he would win tte Suburb.au. barring accident. Maddens talk was responsible for the abnormal plunge on Fayette. Hilarious and Joe Madden collided at the start, the latter boring out sharply and running Into the fa vorlte head on. Both recovered so inicklv that ii was a mere moment before Fayette was deprived ol the lead lie had obtained in the meantime. Hilar lous rush to the front on the first turn was electri fying and thrilling in its swiftness. During the iv inaJnder of the journey he was alternately being pulled up and sent along. On the far turn the others were practically distanced. Butwell took such a strong pull on Hilarious in the stretch near Ing the finish tl at he passed the imaginary winning line only half a length in advance of Joe Madden. The latter had been outpaced, although under pressure in the early stages, but was going like a cyclone at the end. Fayette was unexpectedly close up ai the end after having seemingly dropped out of contention on the stretch turn. The Madden colt t:m in spots and may have been adversely affected In the somewhat cuppy going, lractical ran brilliantly for seven furlongs and then retired, showing pa! liable unfitness. The Belmont youngsters race was impressive. The running of the Carlton uncovered the probable favorite and winner of the Suburban In Hilarious. A majority of the horsemen who saw the Keene three-year-old perform this afternoon are of the opinion that Mr. Keene has a mortgage oil the Sheopshead Bay classic. While the Greater New York Steeplechase proved ■ onesided affair, the remaining races, including the Manhanset. developed first-class contention. Tie two-year-old stake in particular was spectacularly one of the best races witnessed this season. Waldo, the favorite, seemed so hopelessly out of the running during the early stages that his backers had given up hope of his winning. Beginning the final sixteenth, however, he began to overhaul the leader so rapidly that the spectators became frenzied with excitement, and when lie was pulled up in the last half-dozen slrides a winner the sriectators bestowed generous applause on the viclor and his iockov.
