I ; t CELLA HORSES SUCCESSFUL ALL RED WINS VALUABLE BREWERS EXCHANGE HANDICAP AT LATONIA. Console, a Stablemate, Scores Later in Day After Being Heavily Backed — Wet Track Conditions Again Prevail. Cincinnati. O.. June 17.— The Brewers Exchange Handicap, which was the feature of a good card at Latonia this afternoon, was taken bv L. A. Cellas All Red. coupled in the betting with Sea Swell as favorites of the race. II. G. Bedwells pair. Madman and Richard Beads were respectively second and third. There were eleven starters, and the net value of the race to the winner was ,790. Of the originally carded entries, five were withdrawn, bnt frequent showers after the second race, merging Into a steady downpour following the third, brought alioiit a change In track conditions that induced the owners of Dainty Dame. Halket. Madman and Alice, eli-gibles with a penchant for sloppy going, to add that quartet at the last moment. . The Cella pair were heavily backed from the commencement of betting, and gave their backers encouragement at all times by running forwardly until the final furlong, where All Red passed Madman and went on to win with plenty to spare. The Bedwell pair, which had been the leaders during the early stages, held the others safe to the end. The tabled history of the Brewers Exchange Handicap is as follows: Year. Winner. A. Wt. Jockey. Val. Time. 1902 Sevoy 7 120 E. Rohtson..695 1:141 1903 Dick Welles...:! 112 T. Knight.. 1.555 1:13* 1904 Silk Maid 3 101 J. Martin.. 1,790 1:14 The Cella colors were likewise carried to vlcto by Console in the fifth race The paddock contingent wagered heavily on Console and Mr. Cella is credited with having won handsomely on his horse in various sections of the country. Frequent showers during the early morning dampened the surface of the track to such an extent that it was feared the going would militate against the chances of horses favoring anything but fast track conditions. The going, however, was somewhat de ceptlve, as firm footius prevailed. In the opening dash Bellcview. ably ridden by V. Powers, landed the purse. Powers followed his initial success bv piloting Prince Imperial ami Merrick to victory In the succeeding races, which permitted his followers to pocket substantial winnings at the expense of the seven teen layers. Rough riding in the closing race on the part of jockeys Taplin ami W. Paul gave the backers of their mounts some anxiety. Taplin was on Font, the favorite, aud Paul piloted Denver Girl. Before turning into the stretch. Paul re| ea tedly and sharply interfered with Font, but when straightened away in the stretch Taplin became the offender. No claim of foul was lodged, and the officials allowed the race to stand as the horses finished. Font getting the purse. Severe criticism is heard because frequent and flagrant rough riding lias seemingly been allowed to go unchecked. Powers. Taplin and McGee have been frequent offenders in this respect. T. C. McDowell disposed of the colts Tawny and Whim today. The former was purchased by A. Lu- * zader. brother of Fred Liffiader. and will be sent with the latters consignment to Hamilton tomorrow. Gallaher Bros, got Whim. Hughes anil Romp, both inmates of the F. B. Res- pess stable, are on the ailing list and probably will not again start during • this meeting. After the fifth race McNally was sold to F. B. Respess by Oots Bros. Barney Schreiber was among todays visitors, having come here from his Missouri farm. He will leave for New York shortly. G. Borkel and John C. Ferriss have adjusted their financial differences amicably. The attachment of Mcllowmint was occasioned by a misunderstanding. The Luzader string of racers will be shipped to Hamilton tomorrow. Jockey Kennedy will accom- panv the outfit. Henderson and Hogan are undecided as yet whether they will send their hemes to Hamilton.
